Cabover Expediter

From time to time, people talk about building cabover expediter trucks. Custom built cabovers have been done. This is a photo of a custom-built cabover truck Glen Rice built in 1985.

It is a 1985 Kenworth K100E. He bought the cab new for $81,000. The sleeper conversion cost $19,900. It is a 120 inch sleeper behind the cabover bunk. By design, the roof lines and sleeper rivits line up perfectly with those on the cab. Glen bought a K100E roof section off a wrecked truck in a junk yard. The sleeper builder used the roof section as a mold template for the sleeper sections. The sleeper connected to the cab bunk section with a boot that was sealed with snaps. The ability to unsnap the boot was needed to raise the cab and get at the engine.

It is easy to imagine an expediter truck body behind the sleeper instead of the fifth wheel shown in the photo.

Phil, thanks for posting that picture. I enjoy looking at photos of old trucks. (Truck porn?) I have seen similar setups in the past that pulled stepdecks and hauled jet engines. I heard it was high paying freight. By the looks of the fifth wheel setting I would say Glen may have been into jet engines or a least light weight freight.

How did he deal with the bed in the original sleeper as far as access to the add-on sleeper? Did he have to climb over it to get to the add-on? I assume there was a door on the passenger side for additional access. Cool truck!
