Does anyone have any experience with this company??
I like the sound of the base pay of $1.25 per mile for a "D" unit, and a company with fewer than 50 trucks, but I have other concerns I have listed below.
I have spoken to a few drivers for C&M Transport out of the Cleveland, OH area recently. It sounds a bit to good to be true, all the drivers say they are running real well, with many solos claiming to be doing 10k per month. The teams do not seem to be as happy with the dispatch operations. The catch here is it seems in talking with the solos, they all said the same thing, C&M does not believe in running a truck even close to legal as far as length of trip versus the log book. They work on the closest truck, not the closest truck (team) that can do it legally. A lot of NYC runs, with little or no extra pay, after the extra tolls involved. The most troubling thing I have heard is that they use an illegal pay plan similar to PantherII, well over the legal 15 days they legally have to get your check to you, no fuel cards, and advances are like pulling teeth. Also they take back half of the cargo? insurance from you, and I'm not sure if this is even legal (carrier cannot require you to use their ins) The drivers I spoke with said this can amount to a large amount taken out of your check each month. (average of about 3% of the trucks gross per month) so 10k to the truck in a month means about 300.00 going back into the owners pocket.
OK here are the pluses, I would be running team, and hope that would take care of the log problems. But I'm going to be ticked if I find solo's getting team runs and having to run illegal to complete them They do seem to be able to keep their trucks running a lot better than the FedEx, Panther, Tri-State crowd. Lot's of long runs out to the West coast, little freight coming back. Depending on the driver's spoken with d/h averages 20% to around 50% with the teams being higher because of the CA runs. I also hear that some of the employees in the office either own trucks or have relatives who own them, which can be bad if freight slows down. Pay is always accurate, and if a mistake is made, it is corrected in a timely fashion.
One of the best things is no Qualcomm or highway ******** to pay for, but you must have a nationwide cell phone and pager, which seems to me is about equal in cost, and then you add in the 1/2 of the ins, it seems it could be more expensive to run with this company. Any input, good or bad would be appreciated, I have had it with my current company and need to make a new start at the beginning of the year. I wouldn't ask, but it does appear this could be a good opportunity.
Thank You
