Maybe someone here can answer this for me. A member of my family has a record from 11 years ago. She is in the process of getting a pardon. She hasn't been stopped in over a dozen times she has crossed since then, including once on Sept 14, 2001 when security was probably at the highest it had ever been.
Does the record automatically show up when they scan the passport at the booth, or does the agent have to do another check to see the record? I understand that once they know of the record, it doesn't go away, even after a pardon, which then requires a waiver. But I've also heard if the US doesn't search the CPIC computer before the pardon, they won't know about it after the pardon is granted. She's concerned because her work will require the odd trip to Michigan, and is worried that the start of the pardon process may have raised a flag on her file.
I was tempted to go to the border myself, present my passport and ask the guy how he knows if I have a record or not, but didn't want to get anything attached to my file saying "s*&^ disturber, search vehicle thoroughly" every time I cross LOL.
