Could somebody please tell me the most I could possibly make per mile with a 20 foot box capable of carrying 22,000 or 23,000 lbs (Tandoms)- would I be able to get paid "D" freight from Panther if I were to work for them? Class8 Kenworth W900L or T800L- 13.2 front- super 40 rears 120 inch sleeper-18 foot box with gate. No house payments- No Wife-No car payments-Just me and the truck. I just like big trucks and big horse power (cummins 525) and most of all being comfortable. So the box length has to go. Not interested in Semi.

we have a 125" sleeper and a 18 ft box. It is a KW. If starting out with Panther you should get $1.20 per mile and can carry 9501lbs or over. Anything under that I believe it is a $1.10. Both would have a fuel surcharge in addition to those numbers.
Love to see a picture of that ride. We like the large cars as well.

Hello-

Thanks for the reply. I am waiting for Michael at Panther to give me the O.K first- then it's off to Fort Wayne to Slap the 20% down on the KW. I've been going crazy specing it now for 2 weeks. Can't wait! Everything is going to take 10 weeks until delivery. I'll also go with the 18 foot box. I was just fishing to see if I was the only one crazy enough to do it. lol

Hello-

Yes I'm excited about the truck. 2005 W900L w/Cummins 525. Just thought that I would have fun while I'm working. No real worries about money right now so decided to go all out on the truck. When I get it in about 10 or 11 weeks I'll show you a pic or two. I grew up in the trucking business. Household (global Van Lines) out of California our company had 400 drivers -world wide operation.Dad bought a bankrupt van line with 3 other partners (Howard Van lines) in 1959 and made it into Global World Wide Moving (CEO for 26 years). He was president of Movers Conferance Of America -President of Household Goods Carriers Bureau- Director of American Trucking Association all headquartered in Washington D.C. Then deregulation killed the business in the seventies and that was that. The partners sold out in 1985. I have been goofing off ever since. When I was a kid I worked in settlements at Global to pay all of the drivers. God did those guys make alot of money. I can remember guys calling me on Friday out of New York and being at my desk Monday morning in Anaheim California with they're hand out. Back then they were getting huge fuel surcharges. Something between $600.00 and $700.00 for a loaded 45 drop frame and just going from New york to California and that was just the fuel- add on another 11 or 12 thousand and that was they're check for maybe 2 or 3 weeks work. If that-believe me they earned it. They loved to show off they're trucks always admired they"re huge trucks with the big sleepers and told myself one day I'm going to have one of those babies. I thought I would get back into the business somehow and Expediting sounds right up my alley, Who knows maybe I'll put on a bunch of trucks with a carrier one day. Sounds like fun!

Thanks for the reply-

Well it sounds like you know the general trucking business, but in expediting the big thing is TEAM ,TEAM, without a co driver you will not make big bucks. You will get buy and probably pay your bills ok,but you are working for the truck and 525 HP, not for your self.Thats the way it is and always will be,unless you are on a weekend trip, your miles and hours will be limited. Find one of those warm women and take her along. I have always figured that a co driver is responsible for 60 % of the revenue. Because having the co driver gives you the hours needed.

Rich,

I have to agree 100%. The veterans know it's all about same houshold teams - mile for mile and dollar for dollar - they are always the top revenue generators in every fleet.

Does that mean a single will starve? Not really - but the profit margins are much sweeter with a same houshold team.

IMHO.

Yes Rich your right-

I do know that the team is the smart and really the only way to go. But finding Miss Warm isn't a walk in the park. It's going to take awhile. So for now it's me and the 525 Horses

One might want to call it the RV route of trucking. We have had several large sleeper trucks (120" or greater) and I wouldn't do it any other way. Doing it as a single you might have to watch your revenue closer. 500 horses or higher on a expedite truck seems alittle high, especially with high fuel prices. Either watch your wallet or have alot of fun:)

Yes your right on-

The rv route of trucking. I lived in a holiday Rambler for three years. Loved every minute of it. As for the horsepower to me you can never have enough. Its kind of a personal thing with me. Cars, Boats, Airplanes I never seemed to have enough. I will be bored with 525 pretty quick because I found a way to boost the cummins (they make different ones for different makes and models of engines) to 675 with a computer from Pittsburgh Power check it out here is the URL http://www.pittsburghpower.com/ they say that they put one in a Pete 379X and were going up hills (unhooked from trailer) like a 427 corvette without much more fuel usage with this computer you will get a HUGE horsepower boost with BETTER fuel milage and properly driven you will not harm the drive train. They have helped along many of daily driven diesels producing 800 to 900 horespower (that's 2500 foot torque) with 1200 foot torque drivetrains. These diesels are built so well that they handle it pretty well. Anyway I don't want to bore you with all this Mario Andretti talk. HAVE FUN -that's what you said right!

Big power is nice but at what point is it too much? Used to see guys at the terminal come in with their Petes sporting big Cats and talking trash about how fast their rig will go uphill into a headwind loaded to..... yadda, yadda yadda.

Then you hear them complaining about how much that clutch job is gonna cost and so forth. I guess the lesson is big power is nice but if you try to drive that *BIG* truck like Mario Andretti you are going to have big repairs too. Tires, brakes, clutches, U-Joints, you name it. This is why many fleets have their trucks de-tuned to some extent.

Yes driving a truck like Mario is nuts-

I prefer driving like Al Unser personally. I also like to fly upside down. I heard it was a good cure for balding.

Bigschu2,

I thought of you this morning at breakfast when I came upon a Cat engine ad in a trucking magazine. It says, "Engines With Pure Attitude." It's about the new Cat C15 625 HP engine. "Whether it's for heavy haulin', comfortable crusin', or bein' 'King of the Hill,' the C15 gives you the most powerful engine on the road today...."
It will be available Fall, 2004.

You have me thinking about trucks in a whole different way. Think of a straight truck with that engine. Give it a paint job that makes the truck look like it's racing by even when it's standing still. Gear it so it will burn rubber when you start from a red light. Put a slogan on the truck, something like "When we say 'Expedited'...we really mean it!"

When Smokey pulls you over, just say, "It's OK, officer. I'm an expediter!"

VAROOOOOMMMM!!!!! VAROOOOOMMMM!!!!!
