Beware in Dallas

We are spending a very exciting weekend at the Flying J in Dallas. Fixing chicken lights, installing a new computer stand, wow, what fun. There were TWO trucks robbed here last night. Both had left windows open. One left the side windows open just a crack, the other had a vent window open. Both drivers had left thier pants on the front drivers seats. Both had them taken. One driver lost his wallet which he had left in his pants. Credit cards and CDL gone. The other driver, a woman, only lost the pants. She did not have a wallet in them. Be careful when you park. This can happen anywhere. Close and lock all doors and windows when you are sleeping. Run the air or heat if you have too. Fuel is cheap compared to what might happen to you. These people were lucky. They were not hurt.
It could have been much worse. Layoutshooter

We don't stay at the J or the TA in Dallas. We'll drive the extra miles and stay in Rockwall.

Wasn't there a post on exactly this same thing, in the same place (Dallas) not too long ago?

We've heard of things being taken off the seats before. You have to have your truck locked up tight to be somewhat safe. There's a Love's a few miles south on 45 that was MUCH better than the J the last time I was up there and is much closer than Rockwall. I keep the door windows closed and locked all the time though no matter where I am.

Yeah, I kept looking at the date of the post to see if it was the old post bumped up to the top.

There is something about that neighborhood. It had it's own independent school district. They were last place in the state on the state test. They cheated so well that the very following year they became the highest scoring school district in the state. Needless to say that raised some eyebrows. The state ended up dissolving the district, because it was too broken to fix.

I second the motion for parking in Rockwall if you need a truckstop.

At our last saftey meeting Dallas was ranked the number one spot in the nation for truck theft, break-ins and freight theft. Dallas was folowed by Atlanta.

It was in Atlanta that a driver borrowed my cellphone, because his truck was broken into (while he was in the shower, at the Pilot on 285) and everything in it was taken - even his clothes. He was calling a taxi, to take him to a bar, and I don't blame him. He asked if I wanted to go with him, and I almost said "I'm not leaving my truck unattended in Atlanta, are you crazy?!" but he seemed to feel bad enough already, poor guy.

Now Col I understand about the shade trees. I came from farmers and can still see some of them enjoying the shade and breeze that those trees gave. BUT.......you just be careful WHERE you're pickin' those shade trees to park your carcus under, bad people are everywhere now a days and some would just as soon shoot ya as to look at ya, shade tree or not! Matter of fact, you might just look to them like the 'easy pickins' that they like!:D

Well, its NOT why you were thinking - LOL - I mean if one where looking to buy a truck, are some more theft resistant than others. Specifically the bulkhead type doors you see in a Pete, KW or FL.

For example I understand there's a small hole in the bottom of FL doors which if you insert a thin metal rod it will pop the door lock.

Back when we drove fleet owner trucks, they were mostly Freightliners. Once in a Freightliner shop, the mechanic lost the key to the truck. The truck was locked up in the lot. After looking for the key for a half hour, he finally found it in his pocket.

I asked him what would have happened if he had never found the key. He assured me it was no problem. He would have tried other keys from othe trucks until one worked, and then made a copy from it. He said Freightliner only has a few lock and key combinations. It is not hard to find a key from one truck that will fit another.
