Beware at&t data connect plan

I have at&t data connect plan from 2005 and i refuse to sign a new contract. The one that i am under is an unlimited plan they now limit people to 5 gigs. I started getting emails from at&t telling me i was about to go over my 5gigs. So i called them and told them that i have a letter from a regional manager telling me that i have an unlimited plan and can never be charged for going over the 5gig. It's called an evergreen contract as long as i pay the bill they have to honor the original contract. I was told to disregard the email then i got another so i called in again. When i talked to them a second time about the email they screwed up in a big way. The customer service lady told me there is a code number in my file so she looked it up and read it to me out loud. The code was a new policy saying that starting in July of this year at&t is going to no longer honor the plan and are going to send a huge bill to everyone and offer a 1 time forgiveness of that bill and you will either have to cancel or agree to the 5 gig plan. They are not sending out notices that they want to end the unlimited plan they are going to blind side people and the FCC is not happy with them. Talked to someone at the FCC today they are going to file a complaint with AT&T about how they are trying to screw over people with old accounts to force them into a new and much more expensive rate plan ill keep everyone posted

AT&T is now the BIG BOY in the room, so they can go back to the methods that got them in trouble in the first place.

Where's the FTC and congress? Shouldn't we get 'free' wireless access?

They did that to me a few years ago. I had the $19.99 unlimited plan. They kept trying to sell me on their newer plan, which was twice the price. I always decline. Then one day I got a bill for over $3500.00. When I called, they said my plan no longer existed. They had switched me to a plan with 5mb of data with steep overage charges. We went around and around on the phone. She said she couldn't put me back on that plan because it wasn't in the computer, and they wouldn't adjust my bill until I agreed to the new plan.

They finally wrote off all the data charges, but when my next bill came, it was over $2400.

AT&T is a criminal organization.

Why should it be free?

AT&T is a criminal organization.

We (up here in Canada) just got notices in all of our various 'Bell' phone bills basically saying that effective on a future date (like September 1st or something), the contracts they currently have in place with individuals and corporations may be changed however they want, whenever they want, and continued use of their services/equipment, constitutes agreement. So like.. the first phone call made after the notice period, and suddenly you've signed a new contract without signing it.
Nevermind that even if you want to, you can't get OUT of the contract to begin with.. well at least not without continuing to pay for it.
Criminal organizations are exactly what these telecommunications companies are, all of them.

The cable companies used to have ads on TV (haven't seen any in a long time) talking about how getting services or free-to-air satellite in an unauthorized manner was 'theft', and please report anyone you know who is 'stealing', etc.
Perhaps they thought that people were doing these things without really realizing it was 'theft'.
Perhaps they no longer have the ads because they have learned that people 'want' to 'steal' from them to try to recoup some of what has been stolen from them by the cable/telecommunications companies.

I had AT&T from when it was Cingular, also I had the unlimited plan with unlimited International thrown in. I noticed about 2 years ago that the service was spotty, wouldn't work when I was in clear view of their towers, International what a joke it died as soon as it picked up a Rogers tower. Around, and around with customer service(yuk, yuk) upper management, instore sales people. Only to finally get so fed up with the b$ that I wrote the Michigan AG, and sent a rather polite, nasty letter to AT&T and immediately dropped their service, and didn't pay any additional charges. I come out so much farther ahead paying 149.00 @ year to Pilot, Ta,Petro, J, for their year service(not that we have all of them) why stress out with AT&T?

Well as mentioned a while ago, the real issue for AT&T is not greed but infrastructure falling behind the needs of the user. It seems that with these iPhones and other smart devices, they can't handle the data load within their system and have complained about it a few times. In the past they have said there will be changes made in the future and the new smart device contracts may be limited.

Apple did a serious injustice to the buyers of their iX products by tying to one vendor, and seem to be the arrogant member involved by locking the iX owners into a sub-standard carrier. Maybe we need laws like the EU that pretty much seperate the carrier from the phone?

The solution is easy, AT&T needs to make an investment into their infrastructure before messing with the contracts.

I saw somewhere that the iphone is going to be also used on another carrier soon. If the fcc complaint doesn't work in my favor ill jailbreak my phone and use it as my modem and that is unlimited internet not 5 gig screw them. The issue is that at&t doesn't have any way for the user to know how much data that they have used it only shows data used for the time you are logged in but if it drops service for a sec you no longer know how much it used and the web site says it may take up to two weeks to update

No, it's greed. AT&T is advertising like crazy for a system that only gets worse with each new subscriber. They worked like crazy to acquire carriers and erect towers so they could cover 97% of all Americans, but are taking their own sweet time in updating that infrastructure to deal with all that extra money that's coming in to pay for the nation's fastest 3G network. <snort>

That wasn't the form of greed I was talking about at the time but you make more sense than I did.

Don't know why you say this .
my communication manager show :

session use :12.92 Mb
Monthly Usage : 3569.44 Mb
days remaining in cycle : 6
it is the Orange one ,that came out ,after i replayed to the Email ,and updated the communication manager about 6 months ago.
i also get an orange window now ,showing every time they charge my account .

why do i say that because on my computer there isnt any such window it does tell me session use only but if i lose my connection and i re connect i lost those numbers. Even so they shouldn't be able to try to force me into a new contract period honor the one i signed
