batteries question

my friend bought a used international box truck 26' from enterprise, i warned him to keep looking, its a california truck, and has 2 batteries in it, he's having a rough time starting it in the cold, even though batteries check good, he says it has room for a 3rd,
my question, is one missing, did it have three originally or was it short loaded to save money on the truck when enterprise ordered it?
it also has no air drier, another winter headache for him, i told him to dump it, and look for a better truckk
, it also has springs not air ride

Don't know about the drier but I've leased and bought about 25-30 str8s over the years and 2 batteries were standard. Adding the 3rd was an option as I recall. At least in the Freightliner models I was dealing with.

Checking good means little IMHO. I just had a battery that would go dead after 24 hours of sitting. It kept testing as good I kept arguing it wasn't. They replaced it I think just to get rid of me, I haven't had a problem since

sent from my Fisher Price - ABC123

At 500,000miles I replaced every battery cable on my 2001 Pete. All good clean connections and was starting fine when I sold it well over 900,000 miles.

It's good to be proactive. :)

A visit to a Navistar Dealer with a vin number would quickly tell him if it was built with 2 or 3 batteries.

If he decides it's time for 2 new batteries I might look at putting in three.

Of course make sure there aren't other issues first.
