I am in Knoxville at the dealer to look at some new trucks and to get a little bit of warranty adjustments on mine. A driver is at the service desk talking to the 3rd guy waiting there. He's bragging about his truck being programmed for 93mph and 88 on cruise. He goes on to tell about a run from NY to NC somewhere that even with being stopped over 30 minutes to give a statement about an accident he witnessed he still completed at an average of 71.4mph overall. It's idiots like that that are responsible for the big push for EOBR's, speed limiters and a lot of the things that are being forced on all of us.

You know you see this more and more not just big trucks but 6 and 4 wheelers to. I wonder what type of fuel mileage he gets at those speeds and is he buying the fuel. Also he runs the risk of loosing his cdl due to speeding tickets. Out west it can really bad with guys doing 90mph. Try stopping 80,000 lbs at that speed.

Leo,
One thing that should be included into the stupid moves behind the wheel is the idea that a bus driver (greyhound, etc..) should be allowed to be treated as a car. I mean after a ride over to my dad's this morning, I was passed by a greyhound doing over 85, I stopped trying to pace him at 85.

With the recent bus accident in Atlanta, I think that being in the left lane (HOV lane) for some odd reason at 5 AM shows that the any bus should have to abide to the truck laws with no exceptions.

Are busses regulated cuz they fly by me ..they seem like some of the worst,, Leave early deliver early ..63 mph is what I do 89% of the time ..great fuel saver.

Big buses scare the heck out of me because they drive much to fast for conditions the majority of the time. Has anyone ever seen one pulled over by police? I haven't.

Leo,I'm sure it was just a trucker tall tale, thats what happens when you get a bunch of truckers together, gotta keep entertained.

Leo,
That is a truckers tale,I use to be one of those fast trucks, mine was set at 124,but 106 was as fast as it would go,and that was on the cat dynometer
To average 71 mph, youd have to run constant 80+,and to stop for 1/2 hour,he didnt do it,especially with the traffic from ny to nc.
I've had my share of high speed awards, ticketed for 30 over in Fl and Ar,but believe me,with the cost of fuel, and, not as dumb as in years past, about 65 is as fast as i go,that 7.5 mpg.keeps money in the bank.
Yes,not so much guys running as fast as he claimed, but people believing in the story, helps our industry looking bad

This is just hearsay, but I've heard that the bus companies, at least Trailways & Greyhound, agree to pay any speeding tickets without protest, so their buses don't get pulled over.

Well, I've been behind the wheel of a couple of greyhound buses as part of the job with the company I used to drive for, as well as that company's own buses, every one of those was lucky to go 72 downhill. Although, I did get one Vanhool on a charter that would do 75 according to the speedometer. However, I'm sure there are plenty of other companies out there that do not cap their buses.

There were some days that I wish I drove for those companies, especially when I had to run scheduled service. :p

Couple, three, years ago, I was on I-70 headed out of St Louis to KC. Traffic was moving along at a nice little clip. I was in the right lane, not being passed, not passing anyone, and I was going about 80. A bus blew by me so fast I thought I was going backwards. May be the fastest I've ever seen a bus go. Greyhound? Trailways? Some casino charter? Nope.

It was the Bush-Cheney Campaign Bus on the way to a rally in Kansas City.

Not enough people have read this document but notice question #9 near the bottom http://a257.g.akamaitech.net/7/257/2422/01jan20071800/edocket.access.gpo.gov/2007/07-326.htm . Talking about other types of drivers , a Dodge 3/4 ton diesel pickup owner posted on dieseltruckresource.com asking if his truck could pull a 20,000 lb. pintle hitch trailer . He was advised not to then came back and said he had pulled the trailer , actually 24,000 lbs. from Louisvile to Chattanooga . Beats me how he got through TN without being stopped . Another poster called him stupid and he came back and said the trailer was only 3 months old and had good brakes . He was able to hold it at 55 m.p.h. all the way down Monteagle . IF anyone is not familiar Monteagle is a 3 mile 6% grade with loaded semis staying below 35 m.p.h.

I use to pull a 13500 lb 6 horse trailer with living quarters, with 6 tennessee walking horses, and all that was neede to go to a horse show, the trailer was well over 20000 lbs,I pulled that trailer with a 1 ton chevy pick up,trailer was a goose neck, meaning pin hook up was in the bed of pick up similar to tractor trailer.because of living quarters in trailer,it had camper lisc.plates, and I didnt go over scales,it also had a 400 cubic inch gas motor, and 4 speed tranny, and to make a long story even longer, back in the 60's,kansas had a speed limit of 80 mph,I was taking trailer for some work to be done to it at mfg company in kansas,as I got on kansas turnpike,I asked lady toll booth attendant if that 80 mph applied to trucks to,and she said if you can get that to 80 go ahead and laughed, needles to say,I was stopped at 92 mph, only got a warning, guess was my luck day,by the way, trailer was empty, but still weighed 13500lbs as stated before

Leo, we to have heard of horendous stories from drivers that give all of us a bad name. We usually try and consider the sorse and hope he gets caught before his behavoir cost someones family to get a very sad call.
By the way, if your still in Knoxville at the Dealership, maybe you can ask Jon Mosier which Monday he was talking about, that he was going to call us, concerning the trucks we looked at 2 weeks ago. Thanks and be Safe out there.

Jon had to be away for a family member emergency so I'm sure he's behind on calls but I'm sure he'll get caught up.

I might be told off for this, but if I see a driver flying like that I don't hesitate to either call the "how's my driving" ph# if they have one, or call the cops and give them the plate # and company name.
Stupidity like that is not acceptable.

I don't know why anyone would tell you off - you are attempting to take some responsibility for another in your profession - before they end up killing someone. Nothing wrong with that in my book. We all would do well to remember that any industry, organization, group etc. that fails to police itself will become subject to policing by others. Consider that the next you ponder how bad the new HOS regs suck. ;)
