Hello all, I'm new to the EO forum and I must say I have read alot of very helpful information. I drove for nations Ex about 4yrs ago, been drivin a Tri axel Dump for 2 1/2 yrs local. I'm wanting to get back into Expediting. My Question is If you have your own Authority and truck where or how do you get loads? can you get loads from company's like landstar or do you get them from load boards? Am I correct in thinking when you have your own authority you have or will get all the nesisary insurance to be a free agent?

Thanks for any help!

Your best bet is to do a search, here on EO. Use "authority" as your key word. There are many recent threads on the subject.

There are many places to locate loads but unless you have done it, I wouldn't recommend diving head first in. You would be better served to join a carrier that lets you look for your own loads in addition to hauling theirs.
You will also find that their fleet insurance will be less expensive verses what you can purchase on your own.

Dave is absolutely right.

I also want to let you know that by signing on with a major carrier you will run under THEIR authority. When you find a load, you will be required to run it through your company and they will take a percentage for representing you as your agent. This is a good way to learn where to find freight if this is how you want to go, and the great insurance rates are an added bonus while you learn.

Best of Luck - Scott

Take it from someone who'z been there, done that. If you don't have your act together,ie.truck, contacts, business plan, reputation,MONEY, things will get UGLY. I had my sh$$ together and STILL struggled. Of course,I'm hard-headed and refuse to loose. I wish I'd have found out about EO a looong time ago. Just tellin' it from my point of view. NO FLUFF.

Don't want to give you bad news but a 2 year old DUI will pretty much eliminate you from getting on. As the Nations guy said, you will need your own authority which will be expensive and then run under their umbrella for freight. Essentialy they will be a broker for the customer, obtain the load, turn the transportation over to you with no liability on their part.

I get my loads from load boards and companies

like you said something about landstar
landstar has there own load board that they post all freight they are willing to broker out. that address is landstarbroker.com

when you have authority you are your own agent so i guess some may call you a free agent.you book your own loads

authority cost around $300.00
as far as insurance you pay for your own landstar and the rest of them does not provide cargo, liabillity you will need to obtain that under your own company name.

dont let the start up cost scare you away its worth every dime not to have to take ##### runs from a carrier that thinks you need to be a team player and help them out.

https://li-public.fmcsa.dot.gov/LIVIEW/pkg_registration.prc_option

authority will cost you $300 this is how you start the process

the next step is a registerd agent, insurance and permits

a reguisterd agent can be had for $35 for the life of your company

insurance will depend on the value of your truck and how high of value you want for cargo and what you want your public liability level to be

cost will be around 2k down payment and between 350-500 a month

then you need your permits the cost of that depends on what states you want to run in for all 48 states its around $350 per year
some states are free some will cost about 10 bucks

you follow these steps and you will hae authority in 15 days without letting anyone make a dime off you except for the goverment filing fees.
