A friend of Diane's and mine is running for U.S. Senate in Minnesota. If he wins, he would be a friend of yours too. I write this to introduce him and urge your support.

His name is Dean Barkley. He is a third-party candidate running on the Independence Party ticket. The IP has been a major party in Minnesota since 1994. Gov. Jesse Ventura is a member and is supporting Barkley. A recent KSTP-TV poll puts Barkley at 19%, which is a five percent increase over a poll done a month ago. This is before any of the five debates between the three major-party candidates have occurred.

This is a truly remarkable showing. The Democratic and Republican party candidates have each spent millions in this race. Politically independent and a late entry into the race, Barkley has yet to raise and spend $100,000.

Barkley has served as a U.S. Senator before. Gov. Ventura appointed him to complete Senator Paul Wellstone's term after Wellstone died in a plane crash. While his time in the Senate was brief, Barkley is a credible candidate and a refreshing alternative to those being offered by the Democratic and Republican parties.

I invite you to get to know Dean Barkley through his campaign web site, support him with your financial contributions and vote for him as Diane and I are doing.

Having worked with him in state government and in a number of political endeavors, I can say without reservation that if elected, Dean Barkley would be a much-needed force for fiscal responsibility and true reform in Washington.
