Are Abraham Lincoln’s words pertinent today?

In 1863, our nation was in crisis. President Abraham Lincoln signed the Proclamation appointing a National Fast Day. His words are as pertinent today as they were 100 years ago.

“Whereas it is the duty of nations as well as of men, to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God, to confess their sins and transgressions, in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth, announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord.

“We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of Heaven; We have grown in numbers, wealth and power, as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own.

“It behooves us then, to humble ourselves before the offended Power, to confess our national sins, and to pray for clemency and forgiveness.”

What is this obsession with America's national sins? For what exactly should we seek forgiveness? Give a bill of particulars and be prepared to defend them.

Thinking back to Lincolns time...

What sins would he be referring to?

Slavery?

Family killing family as in the Civil War?

Speculation as to his thoughts?

We are not allowed to mention God anymore. Sin no longer exists, everything is fine if it feels good. Nope, no longer makes sense.

I can't remember what town I went thru for the life of me...and every sign and banners was "Merry Christmas"...And a sign when entering the town said something like " It is still Christmas here"

Sorry OVM, Lincoln was a man of the times. He is the single source of our federally controlled central government which wasn't the way our country was to be formed.

The states were before that time independent from the feds but look what happened.

Sins?

Slavery?

Family killing family?

All of this is in the past, the truth is not easy to find and it does an injustice to everyone who died fighting a war between the states when we accept revised history that makes all out as victims, even after 147 years after he said these words.

When our country changes our attitude, like John Brown being a terrorist, then we can put behind us the false history and move forward.

You are over my grade now...

I was just seeing what discussion I could get going....I have no reference point to even discuss this myself...

But what reference are you looking for?

Start with the reasons for the war between the states before and right after the 1860 election.

Is there anything remotely truthful of American History in that time period on the net?

Amen to that. Great post OVM.

If you take part of this speech out of context

“We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of Heaven; We have grown in numbers, wealth and power, as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own.
It could be applied to what is happening now in the US...the anti-God lobby....

The early settlers came here to rid themselves of religious persecution and now here we find ourselves in that very situation.
produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own.
I would take that as a believer and honest, hard working individual good husband living by the Good Book and building a great country.

Yea, there's a lot of places but the problem seems to be they are not too easy to find. I am not talking about the h*llbent opinion sites that have popped up either.

Many of the resources can be found buried at schools of higher education's student and faculty websites. it takes some digging but it's there.
