This is our first year to be involved with this program and I wondered if there were other expediters involved in the program?
We have considered this project for several years and talked with other trucker buddies before jumping in with both feet. We were both pretty hesitant about getting involved as we did not know how much time we would need to devote to the program and what all would be expected of us.
We have a 4th grade class in the Saint Louis area which is nice as we can go by their school when we are home. We have been to the school once and will go again in the spring.
Each week I send them a postcard and a email. I asked for a teacher that would use email as we do not get home often enough to use snail mail. Bob was pretty skeptical even after I would read him the email the teacher sends us from the kids. Those letters are so cute and they ask the darndest questions.
Last time we were home we went by the school and we were shocked at the amazing welcome we received. The class asked us a lot of questions and then went out and toured the truck. Seeing the kids and answering the questions sold Bob! He is now is actively involved in finding postcards and reading the kids letters.
If you are interested in doing this, have done this, or are actively participating in the program please share ideas and tips to make it even better for the kids.
We will be gaining a class from France in November of eighth graders who are interested in learning more about the United States through pictures and emails.
