Any money in straight trucking alone?

I work for PTL. Premium Transportation & logistics out of Toledo OH. They advertise on here.

They have solo straight truck drivers . We are both Solo straight truck drivers for them . We are both owner operators. I don't think PTL has company straight truck drivers.

No Electronic logs at present , but we are running paper logs combined with a tablet with electronic logs but soon full electronic log devices ( Qualcomm like ) will be installed to be fully compliant by Dec . I am happy at PTL .

I'm in agreement with BIGTRAIN BUT when E-Logs come out, mite be a different story for the solo driver.

Greg, Yes and No. Everything has it pros and cons. I ran E-logs to but I like paper better. In my experience paper is better for a solo driver, just my opinion.

That's true about the pros and cons. I ran paper logs for many years. I thought I preferred paper over ELD until I started using elogs a few years ago. I much more prefer the ELD.

Not to hijack the thread, yes there is money in straight trucks for solos, you just have to find what works for you and your business.

What is the longest run for a Solo Straight, if you're are running example from Tx to California do they build enough time into the load to get your breaks and deliver on time?

Yes. My company always give me plenty of time. They build in the 10hr. Break to the run. Eagle Pass TX to Toledo OH about 1550 miles gave me 3.5 days.

They will build in the time for breaks and rest periods. If they don't I wouldn't run for them because you as the driver are responsible for keeping your logs legal and will get cited for such. When I ran straight many yrs ago, I always ran my daily avg. at 2 mph under the legal speed limit, if that makes any sense. Example would be if legal speed limit was 65 mph, I would log at 63 mph (630 mi per day) and so on.

What carriers out there cater to solo straights and what rate are you at all in with surcharge if you don't mind me asking?

As you know we have our fleet with Load 1 and our solos do pretty well. Our drivers are satisfied. They could do better but we all could do better in a perfect world. As far as an { all in rate }, I can only tell you an all miles rate average cause we figure our rate with all loaded and all dead head miles added together. Rite now we are averaging 1.45 for all miles.

Anybody paying 1.75 a mile all in? I don't mind dead heading free if they pay my fuel 20-50 miles. I guess the plus side more then what the rate is, is being able to have work when you want to, aka loads available. I've heard stories where the rate goes up if you're the only straight in the area.
