As we all know there are many obstacles we must overcome in our unique industry, and more so lately the outragous rising cost of fuel. I started in this industry back in 1995 with a used truck that was ready for the junkyard, because it was all I could afford. With years of hard work, dedication, determination, and self disipline, I managed to grow to 3 D units, one of which I drive myself, and 2 B units in 2003, and last year I upgraded all units to 2004 model years with all the amenities my drivers wanted. I am very fortunate to have a great bunch of guys driving my units, and without them I would not be where I am today.Prior to expediting I was a semi driver for a chemical manufacturing company here in Michigan. Last month I had a chance meeting with a big shot with a chemical company. After talking with him for a bit, he offered me a position with his company. After great thought I decided to take the position. I started this past Monday and I love it. I run an 18 wheeler within Michigan, work 8-10 hours a day, Monday through Friday, get home every night, company pays health and dental premiums for myself and family, have 401k, etc. I worked a deal out with my drivers and they are as happy as can be. I decided to take a loss and allow them to purchase the units they are driving for what I owe on them. Some might call me crazy, but these guys work their tails off, and they all made it clear to me when they started driving for me that some day they would be leaving me when they could buy their own trucks, and I wanted to give something back to them to show how much they are appriciated. I could have very easily hired a driver for the truck I was in, and still kept all the trucks, but if I can't be out there doing the same job they are doing, you kind of lose track of the reality of what its like out there. Even though I am not in expediting anymore as of this week, I still have an interest, and will still check in to EO on a daily basis as I always have. I have not posted much, but enjoy reading others, and this is a great site with a lot of great people, and if there is anything I can help out with or answer I certainly will. I wish you all great success and drive safe out there!!

It's a shame to see the industry lose one of the good fleet owners. I've never driven for an owner, but we've all heard the horror stories. I've given serious thought lately to jumping back in a big truck. I really like expediting most of the time, well, quite a bit of the time. I guess I'll keep pluncking away and see what happens. Best of luck and I'm sure your CPA will have Uncle Sam help you with any loss.
