Terry,
You are "talking" to a former APX contractor. I worked for the terminal out of Romulus, MI. I can tell you that it was a decent gig, with a dedicated daily route. I worked there for just less than a year, and the reason I quit was because of Postal nonsense. The year that I started, I made fabulous money. I had a local route, but by that I mean I made three trips normally, back and forth to the terminal. You get paid by the package, so the more you deliver, the more money you make. Unfortunately, you can only deliver what they have for you to deliver on each day. All parcels are picked up from individual customers by trailer, and dropped at the APX terminal. From there, they are sorted and palletized. You take the pallets to the post offices and drop them. Getting back to the reason that I quit; approaching the holiday season, right after Halloween, the 2 districts that I serviced, put out a memorandum stating that the parcels which were palletized, were to be verified by the drop ship paperwork. What that meant, was every post office I delivered to, had to have somebody come out and break the pallets down and count each package, and check for mis-sends. The old way was to just sign the drop ship paperwork, and any overages or shortages was to be noted on the paperwork. This went on through the end of the year and continued up until February, at which point I left. It took so much time to count these packages, at one point I was only able to service 2/3 or my route, and that meant a 1/3 cut in my income. Talking to friends that still work there, they dis-continued this practice last year, and all is right with the world, as far as the contractors went. This policy did not effect eveybody either, so it is possibly a problem you would never encounter. I enjoyed it, and you are home every night. Alot of guys start very early in the morning, and are done by mid-afternoon. It is almost like a 9 to 5 job. Let me know if you want any other information.
