aluminum buffing

anyone ever tryed to buff out the the tanks and wheels on their truck?
I tryed it for the first time today, not having much luck.
I'm useing a polishing kit from Caswell, black compound first with a stiff ropelike 4 inch wheel this cut the pitts out very well and left a brushed like look to the tanks.
Then I used a spiroll sewn wheel and brown compound, this made the heavy scratches from the first step better but still leaves smaller scratches.
I can't seam to get that mirror like finish I'm looking for.
There must another step. Should I use white compound and a soft or loose wheel next?
I'm just learning to do this. Any helpfull tips to make this go better would be great.

P.S. Anyone know where to get this done profesionally. It's a lot of work. May just pay someone next time.

Best thing to do with aluminum is to NOT buff it. Clean it with a citric acid based cleaner (Blue Beacon does an excellent job at this as far as wheels go,) but the more you scratch it up the more it will want to oxidize. Its nearly impossible to make aluminum fuel tanks shine like stainless steel. Clean the road tar off with paint thinner, but do not abrade the aluminum tanks.
