when I first went to orientation I found myself at a persons home instead of a reputable business.2 they want you to carry commercial insurance which is an extra expence they also want a partial cargo insurance payment from you. they want to hold 1/3 of your check each week to keep their cash flow active. if you quit without a 2 week notice they charge you 200 dollars. If you break down it is still your responcibility to get the freight to its destination push pull or drag or you are fined they never paid me for the one load that I did run for them. need more info just ask

All though you have some legitimate gripes it is evident you don't have a clue as to the REAL responsibilities of a TRUE IC. From the beginning of this forum to date posts like yours isn't uncommon but I will say you are the first person to bit-ch about a company that is at least doing things half right. Tells drop down to your post and address some of the complaints.

>when I first went to orientation I found myself at a persons home instead of a reputable business.where does it say in any rulebook this isn't okay? If this company has the room to set up an office at their home and run a business they are keeping their overhead down. It would give them some bargaining power with little overhead. 2 they want you to carry commercial insurance which is an extra expense actually it is the responsibility of an IC to carry his or her own insurance. You are no different being a driver than a guy doing roofing or carpentry work. If you were to hire a guy to come to your home and put on a new roof you would expect him to have the proper insurance, wouldn't you? they also want a partial cargo insurance payment from you.You are crying while this company is paying part of your expenses!!! What a guy they want to hold 1/3 of your check each week to keep their cash flow active. Now this is a bit-ch of stature! I too wouldn't want anyone to hold back on monies owed to me. Be strong and take his butt to court if you quit without a 2 week notice they charge you 200 dollars.I don't see how they can get away with doing this unless you signed a contract and agreed. If this is the case you have no reason to complain If you break down it is still your responcibility to get the freight to its destination push pull or drag or you are finedThis is also another responsibility of a REAL IC --- I will post a link to this thread that will educate you of the responsibilities of an IC Driver they never paid me for the one load that I did run for them.If you didn't get paid for this job you do have the right to take them to court but then if you only ran one trip and are judging these people from that… know wonder you aren’t getting paid, It cost this company a lot more to put you in that truck, maybe they should be taking you to court? need more info just ask NO!!! We see you are acting like a disgruntled driver. To Date this is the first company I've heard of that is at least trying to do the right thing about using real IC drivers. In my opinion it is the others that are breaking all the rules but then I don't have any contracts in front of me so I really can't say. It sounds to me like you are looking to be an employee to some company so maybe the next time you call a company looking for a driver job ask if they are hiring drivers or contracting drivers. Depending on their answer should help you decide. What was your real reason for coming on this forum and whining to all of us about a company you worked for and only did one trip? Each and every company doing this type of work or any work for that matter can't please all of the people all of the time and most of us know that!!! GROW UP MAN!!! Here is that link and some others, study them.

I think most companies have a policy in place whereas if this does happen they will send another unit (another driver) to get the load. Most may only do this as a means of satisfying their customer. I true responsible IC should have a plan of action in place in case this were to happen but we all know that is a very hard task and expense to demand of an IC trying to make a living therefore most companies will pitch in and help out anyone in this type of situation. Most of the time when a rule like this is enforced it is to cut back on the irresponsible drivers using any excuse to get out of doing a trip they decided they don't want after they made the commitment.

I was once dispatched to take a load off a truck that was parked beside the road. When I got there driver was gone, and so was the freight. In time I learned that the driver had been arrested, and put in jail.He did manage somehow to have a taxicab get the freight and deliver it.(I wonder if this was the only call he was allowed to make)
Under the concept of drag, push,or pull,he got the job done.

All Types personal experience

Dear OldProf:
Are you indeed a former or retired professor?
If so, what did you teach?
I'm a former prof -- of business.
This year I teach again as an adjunct prof at the local community college.
My wife is an RN.
She and I have also done much trucking together -- in both expediting and electronics (and other high-value products).
In 2001 we "retired" from trucking -- so that we could go (as unpaid volunteer workers) aboard the Mercy Ships.
Now we've come back ashore, back to the USA, and back home to Tennessee.
We've dropped anchor in Cookeville.
She got a job in nursing, and I got a part-time job in teaching.
Already, though, we've started making plans to return to expediting -- next June, at the end of the school year.
You seem to be a newbie in expediting.
We'll gladly serve as mentors to you.
We'd enjoy chatting with you.
If you wish, please give us a holler -- at DocRushing "at" hotmail.com.
(The server scrambled my e-mail address when I tried to use the "at" symbol.)
Best wishes,
Doc.

JIZFACE:
Firs of all i gotta say-atta boy Tony.
JIZFACE maybe you should come and visit my REPUTABLE business based
out of my REPUTABLE home. Shucks you might like it. I cannot imagine you thinking you should be trucking without insurance coverage. Or, maybe you just feel that someone else should provide
insurance to cover YOUR business. I'd sure like that to happen in my
business. How about it, you volunteer??? Let me splain why you get
paid the big bucks in this business. TO TAKE CARE OF THE CUSTOMERS
FREIGHT NEEDS. Pretty simple eh? Do you for some reason think that
mechanical, traffic, weather incidents lessen that customers need for
whatever you're hauling? NOPE!!! Evidently just lessens your creativity to get the job done, and, on time. Not getting paid for a
load is not a good thing. However, you have not shared with us if you got it there on time and without damage. Appears to me you want a
handout and not necessarily have any responsibility as a business person. Suggest you find another line of work.

pardon me

I was only giving my view I do not work for them so why would I whine. I am not associated with the company what so ever. It is true that I am fresh meat in the Expediting field and for the lack of experience maybe I pegged them wrong. But you all talk all that jazz yet none of you work for them(that I am aware of)and if you run your business out of your home, you should not front like you are some major corporation. I was only trying to give a person a little insight about the company. I did not bash, lie,or otherwise. Just giving my opinion if you do not like it then take it as a grain of salt. I exit in peace good day fellow truckers.

RE: pardon me

I almost have to agree with Jizface based on my experience. I answered ad for an expediting company to find an o/o. Happens this business is out of the guy's home. He needs me to deliver a load to GM in Arlington, TX in 30 hrs by myself. I do the job and get paid, but find out the guy never payed my o/o. Needless to say, I'll never do that again without cash up front (or at least in neutral hands).
1. Being that they're small, bigger companies can neglect paying them for a long time with little consequence.
2. They usually don't have financial backing to pay their o/os in case something goes wrong.
3. Being that they have only a couple o/os the safety issue comes into being. I drove 1250 miles in 30 hrs (pushing a newbie a little too much IMO).
4. Once it was delivered they didn't even try to get me a backload.

My suggestion is: until you get a few years experience in the expediting business, stay with the big guys. Chances are, you won't get screwed as badly as with a smaller company, if at all. After that, I would only take a chance if I had enough money put away just for this venture. They say only gamble with money you can afford to lose.

Buddha bless you so you don't get clutch leg.

RE: pardon me

Wait A Minute --- You don't work for them ???? yet, "you didn't get
paid for the load you did run"???? I guess i'm not sure what I have read here. When typing on a forum such as this oppinions really do
not even closely subsitute for an experience. Could you splain yourself????

RE: pardon me

Size of the business doesn't always mean that you will get taken. Talk to drivers for them and base a decision on that. Alot of fleet owners operate out of their homes but are leased to a larger carrier.
A commercial store front business may have more issues regardless of size. In the extreme, look at Enron. They took essentially everyone who had a relationship with them and put the screws to them. Including employees and their stockholders.
Hard to lose if you know what you are betting on.;)
