Not being cynical here, just finding it VERY hard to believe so many are grossing over 1.00 a mile for ALL MILES DRIVEN. I'm sure it's over 1.00 a mile for loaded miles, just not ALL miles, which I believe is what the poll is looking for. I think this poll is much to generic to get honest answers, because I know not all expediters out there are miracle White-Glove drivers who do absolutely no deadhead at all and get $2.00 a mile on every load.

It is certainly possible to average over a $1.00 a mile for ALL miles. We are doing that now. However, we have been on the other side (with a nameless carrier) in which we averaged far below that $1.00 a mile. Keep in mind that I am factoring border crossing pay, deadhead and fuel surcharges into that number.

I think they should be factored in. I think a comment I made in another thread is what prompted Teacel to start this poll. I stated that I would like to have a better idea of what folks are grossing per year/per all miles. I stated that I was looking for a basic number: Total miles put on your odometer this year / total gross pay.
Total gross pay, in my opinion, means every check that was written to your company from your carrier for anything.

Thanks to everyone for you participation in this poll and your input.

Thanks,

I agree. the only thing I didn't include was detention time because I look at that as a seperate issue in our operating costs ect. We have had detention time for a whole weekend which was a significant amount of money. That would tend to "color" the results that you may be looking for.

In response to Dave about detention time. I respect your judgement on that, but i would still consider that as income to the truck. I wouldn't think it's enough to change the overall avg. for the year by very much though. Of course, as a newbie, I have no idea how much detention pay you see, but just the nature of the business makes me think that you shoudn't see a lot of it.

Thanks for the input!

You could count it as truck operating revenue but we choose to seperate it. Biggest reason is there is very minimal cost. We run a generator which burns a gallon or two every 24 hours. So we look at it as more of a wage based payment. For us it represented only 1% of total revenue.

I looked at the grosses, they are so low for the 'B" segment anyhow. And this survey was done during the glory years? Me thinks some were a little light on the pencil.

LOL, Lawrence, you wouldn't believe how many times I have tried to find that survey! I could remember seeing some kind of survey of drivers, categorized by company and truck class, but when I began looking for it, I had no idea where I had seen it. I don't think it has been 4 years since I first saw it, probably 2 or 3.

Anyway, thx for posting that...been looking for it.

I haven't went to the survey yet, but I'm sure it will be interesting to see the rate changes over the years. As I understand it, those really were the "glory days" of expediting, as OVM stated.

Thx,
