additives

i thought i would ask the trucking community this question because
it has come up on the tdi(vw diesel) car forum concerning diesels.
with ulsd the law of the land and many older diesels not set up for it are you using an additive like stanadyne or power service?

how long have you used it prior to ulsd and have you seen any difference with it?

thanks

I have a testimonial for Lucas top end lubricant. My 1996 FL70, Cummins C8.3 was getting poor fuel economy <9, and losing power after 2 years of Kalifornia's ULSD (no additives). I tried some Lucas and the power came back and the fuel ecomony is back to 10.5-11.2 after a tank of treated fuel. The old cummins has never run better. $23.99/gal at Pilot. 3oz/10gal.

Tom Cobb at the hotshothauling.com forums says he and several other drivers just buy bottles of vegetable cooking oil at the grocery store . He uses 1 qt. per hundred gallons , others use as much as 10 qt.s . They claim better fuel mileage and lubricity .

Wouldn't we all be fools if what we've been adding to fuel was nothing more than modified vegetable oil?

Vegi oil. Once again, I wish I had the smiley face that laughs and pounds his fist on the table.

I use Howe's in my fuel and get it from one of their distributors for about $35 for a case of six 1/2 gallon bottles. That treats 1800 gallons of fuel or about 15k miles worth. That works out to about 4 miles per penny of cost.

According to landline, they talked about this and WARNED NOT TO PUT in VEGITABLE OIL!!! The computer feeding the injectors is throwing everything into dissaray.

I use to use the Howes and others before the new ULSD Now after I replaced 4 injectors that I have nothing else to blame but the new fuel in Sept and Oct or is that just a coincidence? After getting the truck I ran two tanks with no additives the truck ran great just great. I than added the next two tanks additives (Howes Meaner somehting on the bottle) and it started running rough again, very rough. I was not a very happy camper.

I stopped using it and its as smooth as ever again. Now I am not a mechanic or expert but I do know when my truck is not performing properly. My only conclusion and alot of this is from listening to Landline on this topic is the new ULSD fuel has very strong detergents for keeping the system cleaner much cleaner than before, thus putting in more cleaner is not aiding but actually hurting performance. The verditct according to landline is still out about lubricity but so far very few complaints.

I was able to call and leave a message a couple of weeks ago that was actually played on XM with my question and results. I have followed this closely as it has cost me dearly. An expert I no an open wallet yes.

I'm to am no expert, but as I understand the one major issue with ULSD and angines 2003 and older is the lack of lubrication in the injectors. The sulpher acts as a lubricant and to slow the burn rate of the fuel.... (So I am told)

I run Lucas in the sumer and Howles in the winter.

Buying from a distributor is the way to go but that isn't a great price. I'd suggest checking other distributors. I got the 1/2 gallon Diesel Treat for $33.48 per case of 6 at the Abilene, TX distributor about 15 miles from my daughter's home. It was $5.58 per 1/2 gallon and didn't require purchasing a bunch of cases. I got 5 cases which will last me a long time.
