Adding Cruise Control to GM van

Has anyone ever added cruise control to a Chevy/GMC van? My 2002 Penske (5.7L gas) truck did not come with cruise and my right leg is getting ready to fall off. I saw some kits on E-bay but I am not mechanically inclined. Anyone ever tackled such a project or have any suggestions on where I could get this installed other than a dealer??

If I remember right there are three things you need; turn signal stalk, control module and the wiring harness for the module.

All of these things you can get at your local friendly dealer if they want to help.

I believe most newer GM vehicles come pre-wired for cruise control. I think with a van all you need to do is buy the cruise enabled stalk. Check with a mechanic, other than a GM dealership mechanic for more specific details.

Just went to the local GMC dealer to do the same thing.
His quote was, (are you sitting down?) $975.00.
He said that I could get the parts from one of the local junk yards and he would put them in.
You need a switch for the steering column and a modual a bracket to mount the modual and a cable.
I got a modual for $40.
and bought the rest new.
with labor it will cost $450.00
Hope this helps.

Was that for your '99? - yes

Was it a GMC dealer? - No it was a Chevrolet dealer but any GM dealer should be able to help.

I think you live in Mich. also, was the dealer in Mich.? - Yes, it was Rinke Chevrolet in Center Line.

One note, I have a diesel, which means it is a drive by wire system. The dealer insisted I needed the module but I posted on a GM parts website and got a straight answer I needed to pursue it. This was later confirmed by GM (not the dealer the company). I did not need any module but just three switches (which the turn signal stalk has).

Hope this helps.

I recently put a cruise control on a 2003 chevy 6.0. I think thew cost was 249 0r 349 brand new at a custom shop in Akron Ohio. It works great and had a 2 year warranty. Work was completed in just a few hours.:) :)

I got to thinking about the price you told about so I went to the local Chevy dealer to check on the price for the switch.
He brought it up on the computer and showed me the number for the switch. This is a switch for a non-tilting column.
$306.00 = Just the switch alone.

Center line. That must be in the lower part of the state.

The poor people of the NORTH have to pay the long dollar to keep the lower people well to do. ;)

You know how you tell about Michigan being the poor state that it is, well I didn't know till I had moved up her in the center of God's hand that this is where He keeps all the poor. Clare county is the poorest county (per capita) of any county in the state. And it sure shows.

Enough crying over speed controls. Just slow down.

Drive safe.

I added aftermarket cruise control on my Dodge van, the stalk kind - it was done by Auto Impressions, in North Olmsted, Ohio, and cost $250. One month short of the one year warranty expiration, it started acting up, so I took it back for replacement. Instead of the stalk kind, which I didn't like, they replaced it with a matchbox sized control, mounted at knee level on the lower dash, and it's been great for almost a year now.
Call a few of the places that install audio components & such, and I bet you can get the same thing for your Chevy van, too.

THanks for all the replies. I bought an after market (Rostra) unit off the internet for $159.00. I have it but the instructions scare the heck out of me. Do the 2002's need this module and all or are they basically pre-wired so a new "stalk" would be all I would need?
