Best we ever did was on a load for Hickory Farms. We got some "sale stuff" to a store that did not receive their order when required. They made us up a really nice meat/cheese and cracker plate for arriving 3 hours early, got the stuff there BEFORE they opened.

It is quite something how simple, little acts of appreciation are offered by shippers and consignees are remembered for a lifetime by the truckers who receive them.

Business is business, but drivers who feel appreciated and believe the appreciation to be sincere will go many extra miles for the people and companies who value the work they do.

When I had my D unit I delivered a machine to a Chicken processing plant where they cooked chicken fingers for Wendys. They were really happy I got there because they said I couldn't drive 700 miles over night. They could not find a team in the area and you know (do the best you can) deal. They pulled a tray of chicken fingers off the hot line and gave me a box full. Enough for about 50 people. I filled my frig up and when I got to the truckstop found another L/Star truck and gave him the other half. The reason you remember those people is because they are few and far between.;)

Once I delivered an electric motor to a PurinaOne dog food plants. They had to shut the plant down and were so happy when I showed up with the motor 4 hours earlier than scheduled. They gave me a baseball cap with their name on it. I remember it not because of the gift, but because of their happiness and their appreciation of my services.

I also remember on 2 occasions when I delivered at 2 different Ford plants. All I got was a kind of treatment that is not appropriate even towards an animal. I wanted to ask the guy after he screamed at me if that made him feel better about himself, but that probably would have prolonged my stay there, and I wanted to get out of there as fast as I could. I hope I will never have to go there again.

When I was in LTL I loaded at a large hair care products manufacturer first thing in the morning. It was a live load from a conveyor belt to the floor of the trailer. Every Christmas they gave me a large box of hair care products; shampoo, conditioner, hair spray, gel and moose. A couple times during the year their regular truck load carrier would get jammed up and couldn't get in to spot trailers. I would spot a trailer or pull one from the dock for them and in return I would get a grocery bag of hair care products. I not sure if they appreciated me or took some perverse pleasure in giving a bald guy all that hair stuff.

Pearson Candy always had Salted Nut Rolls for the drivers. I think my favorite was Everfresh Foods, maker of China Boy chow mein noodles. They always gave me a bag or two of noodles and an open box of fresh from the ovens, steaming hot chow mein noodles.

Man, Reese's cups are the best. The only time I ever got food was when I picked up a trailer load of sardines in E. Lubec, Maine....gave a case to an uncle that loved eating those things..not me.
