A Natural High When Driving a Truck; Do You Get it Too?

Excerpt from my blog today:

While driving today, I experienced several hours of maximum satisfaction. The weather was beautiful, the winds were mild, spring-green foliage covered the Tennessee countryside, freeway traffic was light, the road was smooth, the truck engine hummed and the tires sang as if they too were pleased with their circumstances.

The conditions were great but the satisfaction came not from them. It came from knowing that there was nothing else I would rather be doing and nowhere else I would rather be at the time. I did not want to be older or younger, or in a different job, or in a different place, or moving faster or moving slower. Thoughts about money, regrets about the past, concerns about the future and other such things disappeared like a light summer cloud fading into a rich blue sky.

It was a natural high that I sometimes get when driving the truck. It comes not when I reach for more, but when I cling to less.

I sometimes feel like that when it's a full Moon and running where the traffic is light and after mid night on a cool summers night with the window down. With a good paying load and plenty of time to get there.

Had to ad that.:D

Using a tailpipe as a personalized bong? Hadn't thought of that.

I get a very relaxed feeling when I cross lets say I10 on the raised highway portion in Louisiana hearing the diesel groan and the wind on my arm and a fine cigar lit and just looking at all the wonders of nature.

I also like crossing alligator alley it has always been a relaxing drive for me. Guess it is because I am away from all civilization for a while.

I thought it was called "spring".
I feel that way fairly often, it counters the days when we have to drive in LA, when loads cancel, when there's 10 trucks ahead of you on the board, and every other stressor. That's a lot of feelin' good to trump the feelin' bad. ;) Felt it today when we drove into Oregon for the first time.

There is nothing more enjoyable than being high in the mountains of Virginia or PA and the smell of the fresh air and I
gaze over and look out my windshield. At the very top of the mountain I see God with his arms streched out as if to say this is Life, this is what I created for you, this is America the Beautiful, Live for today! Life is good!! Thanks to my great owner for giving us this oppertunity to enjoy life to it's fullest!!

I have not "worked" a day since I began driving in 1969.

A person that enjoys their chosen profession, will always have good days.

Frustrations, yes, but no stress.

Good thread, Phil. I was just talking to a friend about the feeling when I was running I-80 in PA. That's a section of road that makes my heart sing. :D

To be honest my natural high is picking that perfect meal for the evening. It doesn't happen often.

NOTA got it for me also...this is not work for me...yea i have been called a "vacation expediter"...but just running out on the open hyway loaded at 2 am, no one around, a set of tail lights far off ahead of you and maybe a far away set of headlamps coming towards you on the other side of the highway a clear sky and the stars...and blues or Cousin Brucie on the radio...it just doesn't get much better...:)

There are times when I feel that way also. I also love going across LA in the bayou area and that 20 mile bridge.

I often have to turn of the music, turn off the phones, and just enjoy what is happening outside of the windshield. I blogged about this phenomenon last year. I cannot imagine ever becoming immune to the beauty of the United States and the different seasons.

A smile is in the air!

84 through Oregon, along the Columbia River, and US 93 along Flathead Lake in Montana - just breathtakingly gorgeous scenery, all the way. Views like that keep me loving what I do. :)
