For those who live in Michigan, maybe you realize what has happened and why I am so negative about living here. For those who don't here is a bit of news.
First the background
This state had two industries in it, automotive and health care. The former created the latter by having the highest standard of living for the longest time. We have some of the best medical facilities in the country here but we are losing them too.
In 2002, the state had come through some changes in the automotive industry but still was strong in health care and life sciences.
Today we have the highest exodus in the country, comparably speaking, New Orleans was the highest in the last 5 years but it was only a blip on the chart.
We face serious problems attracting business and keeping them here. We have in the past 5 years Google setup a small shop to take advantage of U of M, we had Krupp expand to take advantage of the need to feed Ford, but we also had more layoffs and more lost jobs.
So far our governor snubs Honda officials in Japan, sending her staff to talk to the CEO of Honda. Toyota she ignored, when Kia was selecting a plant site, Michigan was not in the running. Detroit Diesel got a cr*p load of concessions including forcing my township to raise my taxes to pave roads and so on….
The problem
The governor has done nothing, she was told by economist to lower taxes, to eliminate the Small Business Tax (SBT) and to get rid of the other fees that hold the state back. Her response was to tell the people that the state will be bankrupt if we don’t have her tax increases. So our legislator has given us higher taxes, and eliminate the SBT by creating more taxes.
In a piece by the Detroit free rag, some business have seen an increase in taxes of … ready… 300%, some as high as 500%. My friends in Detroit who have two businesses are seeing their taxes go up 600%. Now this sounds bad but what really is worst is that the people just don’t get how this will impact the state and the removal of her. My rep is the speaker in Lansing, he is being recalled because we can’t afford more taxes and by the way, mine tripled.
She has also created a new film section of government to help with firms that want to use Michigan for filming. They get 40% back from all the taxes that they spend here and other incentives. I can only see Jeff Daniels using the state for another deer camp movie or using Detroit for a recreation of Berlin in 1945.
What I see in the future
If Obama or hillary gets into office, what you see in Michigan will be a model for the country to follow, I will bet my truck on it.
