A little love for our work.....

Why do I love my job? Lets discuss it.

I can smoke in my office...bad habit, but its mine and I own it.
The view from my office changes daily.
I have 3 windows offering different views in my office.
I can eat, drink, and even nap in my office.
My office has a radio, and even XM satellite!
If I don't like where my office is, I can move it, and not have to stand up or do any heavy lifting.
My office goes home with me, I don't have to commute.

I've been a driver for years, new to hot shot/air freight, and hoping some day to move to the majors and drive for one of the big boys. I'm always looking for the long runs, because you never know what you'll see over the next hill or around the next turn. I have wanderlust like you wouldn't believe, so many great things to see in this country, so what if I have to do a little work between photo ops.

I have told many people that I do this for the freedom. I enjoy the fact that I can choose when I take a day off and where. I like that when I do go home, I can stay as long as I want and can afford. I don't control everything about my business, but I control what I want to and the company I'm leased to controls the things I have no interest in keeping up with.

I worked in a factory setting for 15 years and I have the education, skills and experience to go back to that and earn a good salary with good benefits. In fact, I did for about a year. I was miserable. I couldn't wait to get back behind the wheel.

It has been said that if you do what you love you will never work a day in your life.

It is rare that expediting feels like a job or work to Diane and me. When it does, we take a little time off and we're good to go in short order.

Dean and I love the variety.

We get to meet people with vastly differing life experiences, which inevitably enriches us. We routinely explore new places and learn what makes them unique. And we have the chance to visit friends and family all over the country.

What's not to love?

There are a ton of reasons I love expediting work. The one that pops to mind most right now is that it allows the possibility of getting back to places around the country I've been before and have wanted to explore more.

I'm also digging the fact that I sometimes make good money in a short time--like as much in a 24hrs as it used to take 4-5 days to make--and that I can then feel more relaxed about not having income-producing work for a day or three.

That allows me greater time to explore and get to know an area. I have a near insatiable curiosity about America; it's history, architecture, art, culture, regionalism (quickly vanishing in many places), and many small towns and back roads.

I keep the van and myself ready to roll and available for loads; fridge stocked and fuel tank full, and spend my free time exploring while waiting on the next load.

I have always relished being able to pull out of a parking lot and thinking "Do I want to go left, or right?" because I don't HAVE to be anywhere that morning and have time to wander. Expediting allows that to a greater degree than most professions. The trick is learning how to make it all work to one's best advantage while keeping enough pesos coming in to pay bills and cover expenses.

I used to work in some factories, but except the recordings co., all others sucked. I loved vehicles and driving since I was a little kid, and while working for those factories, I knew my place wasn't there. I hated to have a boss behind my back and watching my moves, beside that it was boring to do the same thing every single working day.
