A Blustery Day

Yesterday while laying over in Ardmore, OK waiting for a load offer I thought it would be a good time to wash my van. There was a coin-op car wash just across I-35 from the Flying Pilot. Why not wash my van? I had a shower. Clean body, clean mind, clean van.

It was a blustery day and that's an understatement. Strong winds directly out of the south. The wash bay was a wind tunnel but I got the beast cleaned without getting too wet. After washing I pulled out and parked next to the building to clean the glass and dry my van. As I opened the driver's door, the wind caught my door and tore it from my hand. Over the howl of the wind I heard the distinct sound of metal meeting metal. The door, with help from the wind, went a little bit past it's normal stop point. I got out, threw my shoulder into it to get it to close. It closed, almost. It was sprung enough to where it wouldn't latch.

I called a Ford dealership and they said the best they could do was sometime next week depending on parts. So I attempted to get the door to latch and drive home. I figured $80 or $90 for gas was cheaper than several days in a motel. I used my bottle jack to try and lift the door enough to meet the striker and latch. No go. I ran a ratchet strap through the top of the door frame and secured the other end inside the van. I ratched the snot out of it and it closed halfassed. Off I went. Ardmore to Minneapolis. Just like a Koch driver doing the Best Buy Thing, only I wasn't getting paid.

I dropped my van off at my local Ford dealer this afternoon. Worst case, about $4000 for a new door, including parts and labor. I should know Monday. On two occasions I blasted deer with my Chevys and got off cheaper than this. Big van. Big door. Big bucks.

Warning to Ford Transit owners: Hang on to your doors as best you can. The placement of the inside door grip is such that you have little leverage to hold the door against a strong wind. The hand-hold is positioned off center toward the hinges instead of behind center near the door end.

Man, that stinks big time. Second note to owners, park so wind blows direct onto the windshield which then also pushes doors closed rather than ripping them open?

In the cab business we took a piece of old seat belt and bolted one end to the frame and other to door so it would stop just short of the stop point... Prevented a lot of sprung doors

I believe my Chevys had a steel arm that would stop the door from opening before the point of destruction. I was more concerned about the rear doors getting damaged by wind. I added a handle to the inside of the master rear door because the only thing to hold on to was the long lock stem.

For $4000 I could get a new Sprinter door!

As a fellow Transit owner, I know Ford is very Proud of their Genuine Ford Parts and knot afraid to show it! Hope it works out a lot cheaper. Everytime something breaks it's like we worked a week for free.

an unpainted brand new door is only $350 smarty pants...at least for my model..:p

you are the one that bought a European Import as well....

Had the same thing happened several times to my sprinter door and fortunately that didn't happen. Hopefully you can get it fixed for a lot less than that 4000 dollars. That's crazy!

The $4000 includes painting it, and everything that goes on or in the door (windows, trim panels, handles, lock, everything).

Still, even the dealer list price for the 02-06 Sprinter door shell is only $1300 ($800 from Berry (not called Berry anymore). Add in the painting, and the labor to R&R and transfer everything from the old door to the new door and it's still going to be well under $3000, much closer to $2000.

Before I'd spend $4000 on a new door, I'd request a cost breakdown and have then justify it all, as the list price on the Transit 350 door shell is $1800, though. Wow.

Preliminary estimate, $2311.95. Better than the $3500-$4000 but I won't be getting the 18 karat gold gilding around the door edge.
Are you with CIS? Just curious if my new $9000 policy comes with automatic increases after a claim?

CIS is an agent. I believe most of the policies they write are through Progressive. I'm insured with Protective Insurance, a company that specializes in the transportation industry. This is my first claim so I'll have to wait and see if they jack up my rate.

I hit a deer when I was with Con-Way Now causing several thousand dollars of damage. Truck Writers was the agency but I don't recall what insurance company the policy was with. My premiums didn't increase because of this claim.
