A big suprise in a small package

Last week we took a poor paying run from Atlanta to Livonia MI. That was the small package. The suprise came at delivery time.

We delivered to Rausch Performance Racing! Our son and son-in-law are avid Mustang enthusiest so we were somewhat familar with Rausch. But we were not familar with Jack Rausch, who gave us a tour of HIS garage. After confirming we were not spies sent from Caroll Shelby, lol, he let us take pictures in the bays as well as the finished products.

We are not in the digital age as of yet because I have too mush for my 35mm Pentax K1000 that has photographed my entire married life with children, so the guys wil have to wait till we get home to see the pics. Until then they still won't believe us!

Just another good thing about expediting.

Actualy we did. They had a couple Ford four door conversions. but, the Mustangs took our eye!

We looked at the cars in the holding yard when we arrived early. The stickers ranged from $24xxx to $27,xxx. The finished products were in the high 50's to low 60's. I guess a good name means a great deal.

Nice!

I got a lucky view of the then-new early 90's Mustangs when my roommate took his Blazer out to a place called "Paul Rossi Racing" just outside the back gate to Camp Pendleton. I'm poking him going "What the he** are those???" He's like "Dunno." So we asked when we got inside, they were like "Nothing."

Rigggghhht.

Before we left, we stared at them for about an hour, they were sweet.

That would be worth a little lower rate, but then I'm a guy and we're stupid about motorized vehicles. I got to see the Saleen plant after a delivery and watched their Mustangs being built. The BEST part was on the back side seeing the Ford GT being built. Oh MAN was that fine!

We delivered to Roush Racings Research and Development Center several years ago. We got there about 03:00 and there was a rollup door open but it had one of those expandable gates on it that was closed but not locked. I could hear someone working in there so eased through the gate and went in. There were racks of engines down each side of the entrance way and I am pretty familiar with most production diesel engines and most Ford built gas engines but there were some totally strange engines on those racks. Most were small V-8 or V-6 engines and several were diesel. And there were several racing engines. On back in the work area there were some strange cars also. I got back to where this guys was working and liked to have scared him to death when I spoke to him. He got pretty upset that I was in there. According to him everything in there was experimental and top secret. He was installing an exhaust system on a car that was up on a rack. The car was covered with a canvas car cover. I asked him what it was and he said he didn't know, that it was up on the rack when he came in and a cart with the parts was there and instructions to install them. He said when he got through he would go do another job and leave the car on the rack. He wasn't allowed to look under the canvas. There were three guys over at an engine stand and were conversing in some foreign language. The guy said they were engineers and they looked to be from India or somewhere over there. The guy then ushered me out and we had to wait until about 06:00 for someone to come in and take the freight. One thing I did see that I could identify was a big Mercedes that had been stripped out and was being armorplated. It had a big engine that sure didn't look like it was made by Mercedes. It looked more like a big block Ford racing engine, possibly a new version of the 427. Anyway that was an interesting delivery. But I didn't get to meet Jack Roush then. I did meet him later at his racing shop near Liberty NC before he moved it to Concord. Super nice guy.

Now that's the kind of surprise I'd like! The car nut I am, I'd have been in heaven..LOL.

I never had any cool deliveries like that, but many years ago, I pulled into a rest area down in Virginia. A sweet 32 Coupe pulled into the parking lot as I was coming out of the building. I immediately recognized the car as a Hot Rod cover car, and sure enough, Boyd Coddington got out. Very cool guy, and let me take pics of the car, which of course, I have now lost......
