I saw that earlier post. With stuff like this, I really think there is something to be said about the positive effects of global warming.;)

People need to slow down and stop tailgating. They also need to learn to stay in their cars or get WAY out of the way. Icy roads are a skating rink, the median strips are seldom a safe place in those, or any, conditions.

there is no need to bang into each other...period.
that little girl need not die...it is sad...another victim of stupid...I'd charge that driver with motor manslaughter!...
maybe if more were charged they'd take some responsibilities for their actions...

Maybe just slow news day....who knows...

There are a few companies out here who will simply cancel you're lease with them if you are caught driving on ice. No one has any kind of control on ice. A load is not worth you're life, or anyone else's. I would rather call dispatch and tell them I am shutting it down because it is un safe to drive as opposed to I am in a ditch and the whole load is a complete loss.Keep an eye on the weather channel, and know what is going on in the path of a possible load.Make dispatch aware that you may encounter bad weather if you accept a load going though a storms path. Actually, Nations Express had the best idea with having a t.v. mounted on the wall in their dispatch dept. tuned in on the weather channel.

I see thousands of SUPER DRIVERS every day, Speeding, Tailgating, Racing, Swapping lanes and back and back again to gain one POLE position, Its no wonder these MEGA accidents are happening to often. The CARS are driving far to aggressively all the time, WE ALL SEE IT....especially after Nascar weekends when the driver of the FIAT thinks hes Little E and hes on the Interstate drafting the BIG RIG, and here comes Little Suzy and shes not gonna let anyone pass her...and again and again....THE Car operators think the Highway is there personal racetrack....we work there....and were exposed to THEM daily, If we could compile some video it would be astounding what I see daily...

Just the cars? Lol

The semi's are getting worse every day. More and more careless. It's as if they don't care about their CSA points rating. Tailgating has gotten way out of control. It is a pet-peeve of mine, not only when it is done to me, but done to others. I do not hesitate to call the law on them, and will take a picture, if possible, of the cab/ hood of the truck, showing the co. name and truck #, and the distance between the car in front of them, and the truck.Call me a tattle tale, etc, but what if youre wife and kids were rear ended and killed by one of these idiots? No load is worth a life.

From what I read, the chain reaction began with a sudden whiteout of blowing snow, which will cause most drivers to slow down to a crawl or simply stop right on the road. It's a scary thing when it happens.
The child was killed by a cable that snapped & whipped into her where she was standing [on the median, having got out of a car that just crashed] when a car ran into it. How that could have been foreseen is just beyond me - what would you think?
Drivers: what is your reaction to a sudden total whiteout condition?

When confronted with a white out I slow down, put my flashers on, and look for the next exit to get off the road. One should NEVER stop on the road unless forced too.

Many of the problems we see could easily be avoided if people would stop tailgating.

It was a small but intense snow squall. Road conditions were dry, sky was somewhat sunny. Then from one minute to the next (less actually) whiteout, and a glaze of ice. A mile or two down the road nothing. It was one of those things people call an accident. It's a shame that the child was killed, but it was not vehicular homicide in my opinion. Were there people tailgating, I'm sure there were, some not paying attention, probably. Heck someone might even have been texting or talking on their phone.

sudden whiteout condition.....never in all my years was there a "sudden" whiteout...a quick one yes but sudden?.....usually preceded by what looks like a wall of snow in front of you or across the fields it rolls.....there is a few seconds to take your foot off the gas pedal....but most people ignore the signs of pending doom...or just don't watch for them...blinders on...
