I heard about this contest to determine what the ‘new’ wonders of the world are and thought that it is rather odd that we need to have a contest to actually find out. As I read more about the contest when it started, it was sold as the ‘new’ wonders of the modern world but the word ‘modern’ was quickly dropped.
I don’t think that there should be any new wonders picked, one reason is we fail to understand what a wonder is in today’s context. I mean in comparison to the original, the ‘new’ wonders don’t seems to be picked for the reason that Herodotus (some Greek guy who lived a long time ago) created the list of originals and there are far more wonders that should be counted without the hype, politics or warm and fuzzy feelings associated with them.
Here are the original 7 wonders –
Great Pyramid of Giza
Hanging Gardens of Babylon
Temple of Artemis at Ephesus
Statue of Zeus at Olympia
Mausoleum of Maussollos at Halicarnassus
Colossus of Rhodes
Lighthouse of Alexandria
Here is the list of the ‘new’ 7 wonders of the world –
Great Wall
Petra
Christ the Redeemer
Machu Picchu
Chichen Itza
Colosseum
Taj Mahal
Which by the way includes the four of the most visited sites on earth and the pyramids are also listed because Egypt complained about it.
I find these not wonders but tourist attractions; I think the top 7 wonders of the modern world are as follows not in any order –
Channel Tunnel
Hoover Dam
Panama Canal
Empire State building
The Biltmore
Eiffel Tower
Burj al-Arab Dubia
