3 $ a Gallon

here we go again .
in some parts of the country we see diesel sold at the pump for over 3 $ a gallon , cash price .
it is the good O'l lame excuse of home heating oil competing with diesel production and distribution in the north east .
but other places see it as well .

3$ by it self , wont present any special problem for Expediters , but you have to be prepared for rapidly rising fuel prices .
what can present a problem , is that the FSC will not be quick to follow , there for ,the one paying for the fuel , will have to observe the extra costs of moving the truck .
you need to be aware of it .

you have to know the costs of doing business in the area where your load will take you , before excepting the load .
and if you can , negotiate the base rate , or FSC , to cover those extra costs , or decline a load that otherwise will be profitable ,
let someone else pay to move the freight.

use this link :

Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association, Truck Insurance, Hot Issues, Educational Tools

keep in mind , that just because you drive where fuel is more expensive ,dose not raise the costs of doing business , it is where you fuel that cost you money .
a good example is the new England states , many trucks can fuel in the mid Eastern states , go up , and back out without fueling .

This is one area where expediters are at a disadvantage . It's very obvious carriers don't pay contractors a fair and suitable FSC . OTR contractors for the most part increase their profit as fuel prices and FSC's increase as long s they keep their deadhead to a minimum .

My carrier, one of my carriers, pays a very fair FSC and pays it on every mile I drive not just the loaded miles, provided I'm driving to places they've requested I drive to. By being careful and sensible in how I drive my vehicle I even manage to get my fuel price a little below $1.25 per gallon by getting a little better mpg than the FSC average is based on.

The link given in post 1 is a good resource and a very important part of it if you have an IFTA sticker on your truck is the reminder that Illinois is your friend when it's time to buy fuel. You can make a very large change in your bottom line, if you have an IFTA sticker on your truck, by buying fuel based on fuel tax charged where you buy. Combine that with a very large discount at certain locations if your carrier provides that and your cost for fuel will drop well below $1 per gallon, provided you keep your right foot away from the floor.

Leo's post regarding fuel tax makes an important point. I live near London Ontario and buy my diesel in bulk (2 x 500 gal tanks). The road tax on Ontario diesel fuel is almost 54 cents/U.S. gallon (14.3 cents/litre x 3.785 litres/U.S.gallon).

Every mile I travel outside the province generates a rebate on that portion of the road tax. Because most of my driving is stateside, my gross quarterly IFTA rebate will average $550-$600 per $4000 bulk tank purchase. Since the road use tax that I PAY stateside is less than the road tax that is charged in Ontario, my final IFTA rebate averages between $350 and $400 every quarter, all helping to lower the cost-per-mile.

A rise in fuel prices is the last thing we need in this economy. I contend it was the ridiculously high prices for gas and diesel of 2007/2008 that triggered the severe recession we presently enjoy.

You flashback to Bush and Cheney.............I worry about you ......................eheheh:D

LOL!!! That's funny!! In reality, in the 60's all I did was go to school, work, hunt and fish. I don't have flashbacks. The Bush/Cheney part was my normal smartaleck self acting up, but hey what the heck, we all need a hobby!! :D
