2006 Ford Diesel information about problems

I bought a 2006 E-350 Ford Econoline with a 6.0 Diesel for expediting.

I'm new to this and I didn't know to check the average reliability and maintenance cost for this particular van. I've been led to think that Diesel engines are the way to go for a long life high mileage vehicle. Before I bought, I had it looked over for general problems, but the mechanic was not a Diesel Mechanic. There were 3 ball joints that needed to be replaced.

After buying it I replaced the ball joints but when talking to Diesel mechanics I'm told that that van with that engine is a nightmare to maintain. The van has 169,000 miles mostly all highway. The mechanic says that's high miles. I thought they would be good for 3 hundred thousand to 5 hundred thousand miles if maintained well.

It has a start up problem blowing white smoke for 15 seconds or more and rough running until warmed up. I thought Diesel was like that and it didn't concern me at first. The mechanic says it shows an injector #1 code. Another mechanic says the hard start could be a glow plug.
It has an Sinister EGR delete, Set programmer, and 5 inch exhaust. The seller claims he had no problems with the van for the two years he used it carry dirt bikes but he kept it in a garage.

I was advised to have the engine re-shocked. The dealer didn't ask me about aftermarket add on. Once the engine was re-shocked with program updates, it is no longer in sync with the Sinister EGR delete. I will reload the EGR delete to fix that problem. If the cold start is still a problem after using a fuel additive to clean the injectors and the engine, the injector will be the likely suspect.

Mechanics are telling me they don't like to work on them because vans are so difficult to maintain and gain access to perform the work on the engines. Can anyone advise me about the reliability of this engine and the expenses and problems I could be looking at in the future? Can you provide me with your experience with this particular Van with this engine?

The cheapest and easiest fix on the 6.0 is put a good radiator cap on it...the problems with the overheating and head bolt all circle back to ford used the same radiator cap on a slew of vehicles.. get the correct good cap and that will solve a lot of problems...

There is a couple of good web sites about 6.0 powerstroke one is diesel stop and another is powerstroke. 6.0 was the worst but could be made acceptable with some alterations. Just be deligent with web searchs. I am and have been a Internation/navistar fan for decades. I have 2 7.3s and have had 2 392 gasers.

I was looking at a similar Ford van. I took the vin number to my Ford dealer service dept. They looked it up, that van had problems from day one! Was just out of the 5 year warrantee so the guy was running away from that van.

I personally would not own a diesel doing expediting ..these newer ones are just a mess...$1 more per gallon ...and what's the real difference now days from gas/diesel engine....spark plugs..its nothing to get 600,000+ out of a gas with very few problems..

The increase in MPG is a great reason to get a diesel as well.

I don't like the sound of this at all. You should sell your van and buy my extended 2006 E-350. I only had a couple of issues with my 6.0 like a few injectors after 170k miles but getting it fixed was not an issue.

Invest 50 bucks in Hot Shot Secret. Do some research on this product. It was developed specifically for the 6.0 motor and should take care of your issues. Best of all, if it doesn't work, you can get a full refund, just give them a call.

I have an 04 E350 with the 6.0, I like you knew nothing about the trouble Ford had when they released that engine. Mine has no startup issues but after running for several hours it starts to idle rough. ive been told to replace EGR valve and add the delete kit. Go to Youtube and search Ford 6.0 diesel problems, a lot of good info on there. Good luck to the both of us!

Sorry to hear that. There will be more maintenance and repair issues in the future(even with the gasser). Because of the the costly repairs and finding qualified diesel mechanics can be a big headache, I settled with the gasoline E 350.

In about 4000 miles or so, my odometer will clock 500,000 Miles. Yes, diesel get better fuel mileages. Though cost per gallon, maintenance and repairs, in a long term, will probably cost more than the gasoline model....including the headaches that come with it.

In my opinion, trade it in and get the gas version. Good luck.

Read about this stuff the other day in a truck magazine. From what found on it, it was created specifically for the 6.0 stated it resolved 9 out of 10 injector issues in the 6.0
