yep, its the 1st day of december and in michigan it has reached the single digit figure, its a whopping 9 deg outside, headed to chicago to drop at ge then headed straight back home before the ice hits tonight..a one way trip with lots of deadhead coming back home..but i guess its better then a van outside in the cold..

I delivered in Joliet yesterday evening. Debating whether to stay here or head south of the freeze line to Whiteland, In. That's a long hike empty but with any luck would lead to at least some more running without the snow/ice option. Decisions, decisions, decisions.

Leo I am suprised you would consider deadheading out of chicago, is there alot of other units there?? I don't think I have ever left out of the windy without a load. I am just curious, I am not trying to bash you or anything.

I won't go into purgatory proper. One too many times of being burned by supposed directions vs. clearance heights in purgatory. It's a gamble. Hopefully there will be a good job soon that gets me out before the ice. Otherwise I'm stuck here till the ice clears. There isn't any freight worth driving in ice. The latest outlook is a little better so I'll probably stay till a decent load offer comes along but I'll be keeping my eye on things. I just figured if I had to sit till Tues. I might be better off rolling Monday from Indy than waiting another day up here. Dang crystal ball still isn't working to show me what to do.

Besides the weather, another reason to go to Fla now is the red navel oranges - they're only in season from Dec through March, and are worth having to DH out, IMO. (If you're planning to buy some to share with the folks back home, buy a LOT of them):9

Oh let me see....December First....

Today I thought would be a great day....

I woke up and it was nice and warm in the house...

...figuring I would have a lot of time to finish up on my computer project with my new touch screen monitor...

...I had a good breakfast and wife told me we needed to go to the store to exchange something, so I took her to the store. As we left I noticed a damp spot on the drive way...

...I mentioned to her that I think the gas line is seeping again that I was sure was fixed...

...I came home and she asked me when I was going to fix the gas 'leak' on her van, I told her after I warm up from being out in my truck for 10 minutes...

...so I went out there at 3PM (about three hours after we got home) with the sun shining above the clouds, I jacked up the van, put a jack stand under it and got underneath the van where I found out that the gas line wasn't leaking it was coming from one of the rear heater lines so I gently moved it...

...and the tubing disintegrate before my eyes right after the mounting bracket which caused me to be soaked with two gallons of very cold antifreeze while being trapped under the van because I could not stop the leak and could not get a grip on anything to pull me out so struggling with my cell phone while trying to plug the engine end of the tube with my finger (which is now bruised up a little) I got my wife to come out and hand me the bucket that is on the side of the house...

...after accessing the damage, getting out from underneath the van and changing jackets, I proceeded to tear into the problem all the while the wind started to pick up and temperature dropped a lot...

...I got into my truck, went to the closest parts store - telling the clairvoyant guy behind the counter I need this hose but two inches longer and he returned with 2 feet of hose so I take it...

...get back to the van, clean the ends up, cut the hose and put the hose on...

...start the van, replace the antifreeze, pull the jack and jack stands out and than pull the van back discovering a bigger leak...

...back underneath the van (now it is 5:30), get the flashlight on the hose and see it is now leaking before the mounting bracket...

...because of the tight spot, I got a hacksaw blade, broke in two and had my wife wrap the end with duct tape then proceeded to cut the tubing off before the leak...

...took the other part of the hose I cut off and didn't need before and used that, replacing the hose I just put on...

...checked everything again, wiped everything down and then pulled the jack and jack stand, filled the radiator up again and started the van up and this time it was leaking from a spot before the hose...

...tomorrow I am getting 3 or 4 feet of hose and running it up as far as I can go to contain any new leaks on the tubing...

...D*nm poor engineering, they use aluminum for most of the piping in the van except the piping to and from the engine to the rear heater core, that is half aluminum and half steel that has no corrosive protection on it at all but is powered coated which means moisture is trapped between the metal and the plastic and rust forms underneath - cheap, very cheap...

...so I am still frozen from being soaked with very cold Antifreeze, have heat packs on my feet and my back and it is sleeting out there now, making noise against my windows here in my 'office'...

...I am hoping I can wake up tomorrow without a lot of pain and find my jack and jack stand still where I left it (I don't want to lose the jack stand)...

... the forecast tomorrow is warm (45) but wet, I will end up working on it on the cold hard cement with the cold wind blowing most likely in the rain....

...So that was my December first, thank God they only come once a year..............

Yikes .... I hope the 2nd is better than the 1st for ya.

I dropped 3AM in Seymour, snoozed at the TA and then came up to the J in Whiteland after hitting the Starbucks in Columbus on the way up. Probably hang here .... sounds like it should be below the freezing rain line.

Delivered in Greenville, SC on the 29th.

Picked up in King's Mountain, NC on the 30th headed to Sturtevant, WI for a Monday morning delivery.

Monitored the weather bands on the way north.

Went 50 miles out-of-route to the house. Waited out the ice until Sunday morning late.

Drove through some rain, but no ice or snow on the way up.

Sitting in the Petro writing this.

Thank-you Lord for the traveling mercies!

Heard that!
We reluctantly turned down a run to Key West even called Lucas to see if he felt sorry for us (not)!
To make matters worse they countered with more pay but alas....
Did get a sweet run to Ca or at least it was sweet till Gallup NM where we hit an ice storm..
Happy to say we are 3 years into the expedite thingy and have not jacknifed the straight truck.
Man what a mess on the 40 anywho greets from Victorville.

Goodtude... where were you when you turned down Key West?

Loaded the 30th in NH, headed for Monday delivery in Mt Vernon, MO. Met a little sleet west of Indy, and lotsa rain in IL and MO. Wind really kicked up in MO. No hurry... slow and steady. Slow for me is 58-65. LOL

Now, I'm sitting in Mt Vernon with someone ahead of me in Oak Grove. What to do, what to do?!? :D Can't complain! It's funny how one load can turn a rather crappy month into a pretty good one.

Well I loaded in Kansas City on friday afternoon for a monday morning drop in Frankfort, KY. Drove over to The J on 64 right before Frankfort and stayed there all weekend. Ran into a little rain, but I was south of the freeze line.

Greg, what kind of van is it? The same thing happened to my dad's '97 E150 with the rear heater. One day it started leaking and leaking and we replaced it with new rubber hose. Then it leaked from before the hose. We got fed up and replaced all the lines from the front to the back with copper piping we had in the garage. Hasn't leaked a bit in years. Beats going to the dealer and paying over $600 for the OEM lines.

Also if anyone lives close to Telegraph & Warren in Dearborn Heights go into Murray's Auto parts, Talk to a little guy named Mario. He's my brother, tell him I sent you and he may be able to hook ya'll up with his employee discount on parts.

Sorry off topic for a moment - this is a 2nd of December post.

Nick
Thanks for the suggestion, well the problem is that I can't get to lines where they connect to the other heater lines, they are jammed up against the firewall behind the engine. It is one of those mass produced foreign cars - dodge caravan. :)

But with that said, I sent a letter to Murray's about what happened to me. I didn't want to be too negative about my last two days under the van on EO but I went to NAPA north of Ford road and my father b*tched about the distance, so my second trip was to Murray's. I went in, got the clamps I needed and wanted 3.5 feet of 3/4" hose. The guy behind the counter was on the phone with his posse and was too concerned about where he was going after work to ask me if I needed help - this is something I can not stand where ever I go, personal stuff comes last I am too important as a customer to wait. I picked out a prepackaged 3 feet of 3/4" hose because i was cold and wet and wanted to go home and finish this mess. I had to pick through a bunch of them to find one that was 3 feet long and when I found one I left the others on the counter for the guy on the phone to do some work. Someone came out from the back when we were going up to the counter but I already did my job. I got up to the counter to pay, there was Miss Ashley and someone who looked like a manager behind her. The guy in front of me paid with a credit card, Miss Ashley didn't ask for ID but when I went to pay with a credit card, she asked for it. Now I am not bothered by the idea of being asked for ID, actually I am glad for to be asked but be consistent girl, ask everyone for ID - no exceptions. The manager should have stepped up and asked what the problem was when I told her that she was not doing her job right and turned to my father and told him that she needs to get with the program with a bunch of nice words, but he just stood there staring out of the window. He should have corrected her right there and told her in front of everyone that she needs to check everyone but he just stood there staring out the window (nothing like giving the customers some confidence). If a company wants to eliminate risk with credit card purchases, don't try to profile people when you are not capable of saying Hello with a smile or trained right to begin with.

Sorry Nick but I may not go back to Murrary's. I worked at a large auto parts store before I owned one and as an owner I would have had a serious talk with the manager about his job and being passive like that and I would have fired Ashley for not checking every credit card purchases and made her an example.

I really can't stand the large box store auto parts stores. They pretty much killed off competition and the warehouse system and a lot of places hire idiots. I can tell you I like NAPA because I can actually bargain with the people, buying clamps for $.75 a piece where Pep boys, Murray's and autozone they are $1.50 to $2.99 a piece. The smaller stores are still the best and still can compete.

Oh I noticed that Pep boy's is going out of business on Telegraph.

Sorry for the off topic 2nd of December post.

Well, I don't know about ya'll but I've been pretty busy lately and I'm sitting here at the Flying J in Knoxville on my way to Florida where it's probably 75 outside. Sure beats 9. Well, it's the 3rd of Dec. and I'm not going to sit here in this cold weather forever. I'm just taking a break. have fun! Knowing my luck, they'll probably send me a run from Jacksonville to Canada or something as soon as I get into Florida...to be continued.

I had a pretty warm week last week. I left home in Cincinnati and went to McAllen, TX. Got a run up to Dallas, then a load out of Ft. Worth going to Jackson, MS. Hung out in Jackson for a day and did a short one up to Memphis. Then I got one out of Memphis to Bowling Green, KY. I deadheaded home from Bowling Green. Until I got into Kentucky, I had been in some fairly warm weather for the whole week. I was wearing shorts a couple of those days, now I'm back home in Cincinnati waiting for a load and it's getting kind of cold today, no ice or snow though. I think I'd accept anything heading south.
