Polar Blast 2014 - How Are You Doing?

I got back from a run Saturday evening. Ran into snow at Interstate 65 and US 30, snow from there until I got home. Since then, haven't moved, just as well since Indiana was largely shut down and Illinois has been an ice and snow covered mess. I lost a little money from not getting work, but...

    Keep Calm!

What holiday craziness? Speaking as the only non-Jehovah's Witness in my family, I can safely say there will be neither gift giving or gift getting. Not much visiting either, same reason and the fact that the family is spread to the four winds. So-- I plan a nice, quiet time. Maybe I'll...

The Future of Package Delivery (and Expediting?)

You don't have a CB? OK, I admit I don't have one either-- but traditionally these radios have been our "drones" warning us of just what you mention-- chicken coops, traffic jams and police speed traps, to name a few things.

    Cargo Vanning in Sub-Zero Weather

OVM mentions how well you think you're insulated when the temps are -30 to -40 below and the wind chill-- well, forget about the wind chill because you'll have more immediate worries at those temperatures. For the moment, my van does have insulation but not really enough. 3/4" foam makes it...

    Cargo Vanning in Sub-Zero Weather

I use an air mattress, but doggone it, not on the floor. That would be colder than my ex-wife's heart and let me tell you that is plenty cold. I have a cot that I place the air mattress on. Further, tests with a small fan powered by "The Gang of Four* show that air circulation is key to a good...

The Future of Package Delivery (and Expediting?)

We just may have an ally in the defense of our jobs against the drones. See below:

    Cargo Vanning in Sub-Zero Weather

Leaks. Every vehicle has a leak or two. About insulation: I'm using 3/4" foam insulation board for the job. Next time I'll use 1 1/2" board, it doesn't weigh appreciably more but the R-value increase is significant. As it is, when I'm standing down for a bit the Big Buddy has been handling the...

    Beware the 407

Around here, my GPS will try to get me to use the Skyway whenever possible. I think Garmin must be in the pay of the tollway people. Note that I will NOT use the Skyway unless there's no other choice, a more expensive Chicago-area tollway does not exist.

The Latest in Essential Expediter Equipment ... iPhone Panties

I reckon I'll be keeping my dumb-as-a-bag-of-rocks phone for a little longer.

The Future of Package Delivery (and Expediting?)

Uh--- maybe not. If the flights stay out of protected airspace around the major airports, if they stay below certain minimum altitudes, if they fly only during good weather--- nope. Civil aviation flies all the time without flight plans, and I happen to know for a fact that R/C aviation is done...

    battery advice for a sprinter

That would be my thought too. A good RV place has had experience setting up batteries and isolators-- you'll need one to keep the house system from draining the starting battery, but allowing the alternator to charge both batteries-- and the rest of your "house" electrical system. You'll spend a...

The jury pool is going to be filled with former truck drivers.....

The Future of Package Delivery (and Expediting?)

I have no doubt the tech is there. The problem is, so are the liability lawyers. This is a "gimme" as far as they're concerned. I have a couple of radio-controlled boats, so the concept of radio control is one I readily understand. I can even grasp the concept of GPS directed, pre-programmed...

    battery advice for a sprinter

From the sound of the opening post, I'm taking a wild guess that the starting battery has seen its day too. Pry open your wallet, being careful not to damage those pieces of paper-- they're called "money"-- and be prepared to spend a chunk of change on a proper replacement. You're trying to...

The Future of Package Delivery (and Expediting?)

The lawyers are gonna love this. I can't help imagining what's going to happen when driverless vehicles get involved in preventable accidents-- and inevitably it WILL happen. Can you even begin to imagine what the settlement will look like?? There won't be a near-penniless driver to go after, so...

Advise on Cargo Van "vs" Staright Truck?

I drive a cargo van-- a standard Chevy 2500 series-- and to be truthful after reading everything here, even if I could get into a straight truck I'm thinking I'm happier in the van. Sure you make less money, but you spend less too and unless you're hauling haz-mat in an amount that has to be...

    The term "dry van"

I don't know about the origination except that the term pre-dates the modern cargo van. "Dry van" probably distinguishes this type of trailer from the refrigerated trailers-- especially the reefers that were cooled with ice. Ice melts, and dry goods can't be shipped in a wet trailer.

Nissan NV 2500 Cargo Van w/ high roof

I don't have one, but from what I've seen they're the same cargo-bed length as a standard Chevy or Ford so figure two pallets max. The high roof is good, if they just made the thing in a longer version it would be a bit hard to pass up. I understand it can be had in either a diesel or a...

    bad owners

I have to wonder about driving a van for somebody else anyway. The margins are tissue-thin to begin with, there's not a whole lot to split between an owner and a driver.
