26' Box, stay in SC or head to midwest?

I appreciate the advice about the kids. I don't have a lot of options. I homeschooled my kids until just last year. And I sure hope to not be gone lots, but they need food too, and military pension doesn't cover enough. Maybe I could use a van for local stuff or something and avoid the DOT...

Normal sleeping schedule as box truck driver?

I've heard that van drivers are the epitome of non-sleeping any-hour drivers. Does this apply to box truck drivers too? It looks like availability is key for keeping brokers happy. But that doesn't mean all brokers are 24-7, right? Is it unreasonable to expect a decent amount of sleep hours...

26' Box, stay in SC or head to midwest?

There are so many options as to what kind of truck and what kind of use. I wish there was a guide for this that set it all out clearly. I see why vans are so popular. In addition to lower cost and no regs, and able to function as a sleeper, they are versatile and can be used for anything. Seems...

26' Box, stay in SC or head to midwest?

Yeah, I still think I'd rather drive for myself, but I'd prefer to get the DOT physical anyway, if I was gonna drive a van, as one of the criteria to show brokers that I'm a professionally-minded driver.

26' Box, stay in SC or head to midwest?

I have answers to most of these, but things like avg. load weight and "who are your customers" I guess will be answered after a while of driving. There could also be more types of answers to the customers question, if you mean that I could look into different industries to find different kinds...

26' Box, stay in SC or head to midwest?

Bit of an overstatement, right? It seems to be the general consensus that van drivers grind all the time for low rates, whereas box trucks can make better $$. I'd prefer a van, and not have to mess with the DOT physical (as a Type 1 diabetic) or logs, weigh stations. But I hear the same thing...

26' Box, stay in SC or head to midwest?

I'm trying to follow you here, but exactly what is "underequipped" in my question? Okay it has to be carefully loaded and secured. I get it. Are you saying driver with a smaller truck can't do that? By saying it's not ltl, are you pointing out that the load size can be the the same small load...

26' Box, stay in SC or head to midwest?

Yes, I understand it's about being a reliable driver first, and ultimately building relationships with brokers who will prefer me. I'm just wondering how small I can go before losing out on loads or $$ (from lower rates). Rates are similar for 20' and 26'?

26' Box, stay in SC or head to midwest?

I read this as dock height, you just meant height of box and etrack placement. Still, my original question was whether getting a smaller truck, let's say 20-22', will make a significant difference in the availability of loads or the rates, or both, vs a 24-26' truck?

26' Box, stay in SC or head to midwest?

So, if I understand correctly, a 20' truck can carry all the same loads as a 26'. The main advantage of the 26' is its dock height, especially (and the height inside its box). As for the dock height, is that something that simply makes it easier for the driver (like maybe saving...

26' Box, stay in SC or head to midwest?

It doesn't take up valuable room in there? Do most box truck loads use up the full 26', or less, or much less?

26' Box, stay in SC or head to midwest?

Because...? Not being sarcastic, just really looking for more specifics. Why would be the shortcoming of using Sylectus? Isn't that a pretty good opportunity, since a lot of OOs don't have access to that board?

Signing on to carrier as LLC?

LLC has a particular advantage for my specific situation. It's the only way to go for me. The real questions are whether to go all the way and get DOT and MC #s, or drive for a carrier or my friend with a rented truck, or drive for a fleet owner and not worry about the truck. Does every carrier...

26' Box, stay in SC or head to midwest?

On the path to bankruptcy due to renting a truck? It seems to be a successful business model for a lot of people. Just like some people buy used cars for cash, others get a loan or lease, and some buy new and keep until the warranty expires. Different strokes for different folks. I can sign...

26' Box, stay in SC or head to midwest?

Thanks for all the info. Thanks for all the info. Will look up these rules, but it won't apply until/unless I buy my own truck. I'm still learning the rules for driving, which is why I put the question mark after the "10" hours of sleep. Renting because I dont have a truck, and the prices are...

26' Box, stay in SC or head to midwest?

Oh, that's new info to me. Thanks for that tidbit. So is that for reset only, or after my daily 10(?) hours of driving.

Daycab. It would be a typical 26' from Penske/Enterprise.

26' Box, stay in SC or head to midwest?

I live in central South Carolina. I'm starting with a 26'. Not sure if it's a better plan to: 1. catch loads around here, meaning running out of and back to the general area, or 2. catch a load to the midwest and run around there for several days at a time. I know the midwest is a good area...

Signing on to carrier as LLC?

Currently planning out the steps of starting an LLC and driving a 26' box. Weighing the options of driving for self vs signing on with a carrier. Can I sign on to a carrier as an LLC, where they use ein instead of social, and issue payment to LLC? Is this a common method? Likewise, what does...

Any Type 1 Diabetic drivers here?

I'm a veteran with Type 1 Diabetes (meaning insulin dependent). It's why I'm not still in the Army. Are there any other diabetics around here, especially those with Type 1? I'm a little worried about trying to pass a DOT Physical for the card I would need in order to hook up with a carrier...
