Just want to say as a fellow Load One driver (o/o Transit van) I really appreciate you posting your experience here. I didn't even bother trying to work the last few weeks due to the winter storms, and I think that was probably for the best. Though my wife might disagree

So fires, floods, storms, pandemics, strikes, and now tariffs...and I thought the oil field was a fickle place to work.
If you can find steady work close to home that's what I would do. Am doing

Never more than 250 miles away

(Just my 2c I am NOT a Load 1 driver)

Wow another load one Driver! Finally haha. Glad your here. I haven't checked in for a bit. Yeah, I've been staying clear of all the storms myself. I took a load from Michigan to Houston Texas. Delivered last Thursday and been empty ever since. Lucky me, this is also the only load I've had this month since I took 6 days off at the begining of the month.

One week with no load and not looking good. I'm currently by Memphis which is about as far back to freight as I was going to go in straight truck. May head to Nashville if nothing happens today. Just a pitiful week.

Recertified for hazmat, canadian version. Interesting how much it changed from 2023 (repealed and rewritten)

I understand why people don't, next time I have to certify as a segregated chemical tanker driver I'm going to quit and become a segregated chemical tanker driver

No slack for a small van same test

It’s been decades since I had a hazmat. Talk about a big change. I said, no thanks

I find people complaining entertainment for some reason, thanks for the tip (makes me feel better. Solo contractors have nobody to complain to)

Bah private group. Let me guess - not enough freight

If my company had a Facebook group, you could pick any of the last 19 years and that would be the complaint

I ended up dead heading out of Houston eventually making my way to Memphis. After 9 days being empty, late Saturday night, I finally got a load. I got a week saving load out of Mississippi going to North Carolina. It was a trip filled with broken sleep and surprises. I had just gone to bed when I got the load. Had I not of been empty for the last nine days. I probably would’ve turned it down, but it is what it is. My brain was mush on Monday Morning, so I took the rest of the day off.

—Stopped for a 3 hr break in South Carolina. Beautiful rest area, got a nice picture of Max, who was also feeling the trip from lack of sleep. IMG_5341.jpeg

That was the primary cause of other things to blow up. Some not justified, but most were. Hot topic, are they closing down? They say no. But as I said, we would be the last to find out.
I got a load before I could post this yesterday. A local north carolina to north caroline. At least this weeks charges are covered...My net this week so far is $34. With one more week to the month, this month is not looking good at all.
19 days=3 loads.

In the early 2000s we had the same, around 2010 at the end of a long legal fight the company was closed and all drivers and employees let go. Those that wanted to, went to a subsidiary

Nowadays my door is blank. They are strongly incentivized to deal fairly or it will be somebody else's name on it same day

I control my certifications, licences, plates and insurance. I'm ok but some drivers have up to 5 companies they can pick up freight at the drop of a hat. This is the way

I thought you guys were headed in that direction, here if you are judged a dependent contractor (which is an employee) the company would owe a ton of back taxes (and so would you) but the possibility of that is so financially punishing - they pay 3 times what employees pay on deductions after all - there is really nothing they can do to a driver that "steps out" on them

Not sure what the legal environment is right now. You may need to start exploring that

Personally, as long as they keep covering the cargo insurance and any necessary DOT filings and border charges li still get to act like I'm signed on and get high pay with lower expenses. Win win.

But I have an established company sitting unused, one call to insurance on any weekday and I'm a "multi"

Got a load from North Carolina to Virgina. The next day I got a local from the Airport back to the place I delivered via Laredo. It's funny I was just thinking the other day, that since I switched to straight truck I've only had 1 airport load and boom I get one. I think most of them are local runs, so being OTR, now unless I'm right there, probably will not get many anymore. Almost all these loads come from Laredo, via Mexico. It will be interesting to see if this dries up more with the trade issues going on. I could use one more load to salvage this week.

My "open road" days, often the month was made in the last week if not the last 2 days
