Back in October, I bought and switched to a straight truck, still with Load 1. Retired the Sprinter, used as my transport vehicle now.
Shiny

If I were to decide I could make money with one, it would be an ancient FL70

Don't ignore short runs. 5, $200 localish moves is still $1000....usually pay is higher on short runs also to compensate for the lack of miles

I take all the $300, 150 mile runs I can get in the small van

With all my pre-number crunching, I could never get the numbers to work in my favor enough to be worth it. I needed real life numbers to be sure. I quickly learned that I was right, and made a costly mistake. It isn't worth it. And now I'm stuck to try and make the best of it.

Frankly, I could make this much or more in my Sprinter after all expenses are taken account. If I had a magic wand I would return to where I was 4 months ago driving my Sprinter locally, at least I was home everyday.

If I wanted to be OTR, comfort wise this is the way to go. And I do like being limited by the hours of service. Screw those long marathon runs. The 1st two months I got slammed with unexpected repairs taking a loss on each month. December I saw my 1st profit, but nothing to write home about. I could make more then that at mcdonalds. January ended with another profitable month, but barely making 1/2 less, so a part time job. Continued maintenance issues have plagued me. Making 34 cents all miles in a straight truck doesn't get me excited to continue.

Now add lack of loads and poor rates to the picture, and I've been on the fast track to bankruptcy. Having $17K in repairs makes it really hard to get out with out a huge loss. I've tried selling it, considered putting a driver in it, lease purchase , but really I just want out. I wanted to get back into tractor trailer, but that window of opportunity is all but closed now.

On the bright side, every known issue with the truck is currently fixed, knock on wood.

Dodged the start of snow storm #1 picking up in louisvily,ky. Everything worked out that I could get unloaded early near Chicago. Now hunkered down near Rockford, going to let storm #2 pass before doing anything else. I'm allergic to bad driving weather lol.

I had to drive thru it. Fortunately less than 400 miles this time of week for entire day

Wasn't more than a foot of snow, but heavy moisture packed that still has 6 inches stuck to the bottom of my van making it drive like it's loaded.

In the face of headwinds constant at 30 mph gusting to 50 mph, windshield was freezing at my forward speed of max 30 mph with defrost on high. Was seriously bad. The entire highway system around Toronto (18 lanes total in both directions some places) was unplowed

Lost abs and traction control halfway through, but I'm old enough to still think those are fancy

The biggest thing to happen this week - empty miles have been slashed

Canada by nature has a severe lack of backhauls. Things are spread out and just because somebody wants something you are delivering, doesn't mean there's any other loads within 7 hours drive of you

Just got a client that needs emergency delivery right by the highway I travel 180 miles to pick up (empty) for last 2 years.

:)

Back in Michigan waiting on a pick up for Monday. Had a couple of chances to double my weeks gross with a weekend load, but that didn't come through :(
So if this load doesn't cancel, I'll be off to PA on Monday.

Depressing Side Note: Just finished updating my books for the month. It's very discouraging to look act. I feel physically sick everytime I go over the numbers. I get pretty good rates, but just like when I drove Sprinter, the biggest problem is my lack of revenue. I just can't see putting a solo in the truck, if I'm struggling, how can they make it? I've always said, they can't. Not enough slices of Pie to go around. Only possible way is with a Team and that's not a given either.

Sadly, if I do want to get out of this mess, I would be better off parking it, keep it up for sale, and get a job.

I never pulled the trigger on a larger truck so don't think I'm in any way talking down to you.

Have you looked into stuff nobody else will haul? I've made as much as $10.81 a mile.

I don't have any US contacts, but I have ideas. DM me if you want a few.

They will at least be worth what you pay me for them :)

So much for going to PA. Someone dropped the ball by not informing me of a dog restriction on this load. I never should of been on this load. Ended up getting a shorty into Ohio.

Currently at home. After I finished getting the new alternator on my truck. Parked the truck and time to go home. Start up my Sprinter van and found the blower motor was not working at all  Come on, really?

I've never had a blower motor just stop working without giving some heads up. So, I ordered a new one, replaced it, and nothing. Maybe the resistor which is another likely suspect, but I've pretty much reached my capabilities and effort I want to put into it. Checked for a blown fuse where the manual and other sources said it was #12 bottom row. Didn't even have a fuse in that slot. In fact, the fuse panel itself was lose and hard to even check fuses. Supposed to be a 30amp fuse, there was only one 30 amp fuse and I couldn't reach it. So who knows if I even have the right fuse in place where ever it is.

Tomorrow, I will be taking it to a new sprinter repair center I discovered in Livonia, MI.

Hopefully, the place is alright. Very rare that I don't take it down to Wayne's World in Toledo, Ohio. But it will be nice not having to drive down to Toledo everytime. I left him a message this morning and still haven't heard back. Hope he's ok, it's been a year since I was there last.
yep I blew a blower motor out once..... cause they figured wear and a very dirty Cabin filter lesson learned

I'm thinking my El Paso, where I stayed barely 8 hours before getting a full rate back to GM Oshawa near were I used to live wasn't typical. I actually WANTED to stay later (but took it)

After the drive down, about an hour of looking around at the truck stop and trying to look at Mexico thru the wall I napped, turned and burned.

2 hours into the drive I lost an alternator as it was getting dark. Made it to Odessa, changed the alternator in a Burger King parking lot

On getting home I slept for 4 days :)

Wishing you the best of luck, but enjoy it, get out of the truck stop
still out here eh?

ive tried to retire a few times live about 30 minutes north of Edmonton.... local taxi owner found out I used to own my own cab in Hamilton and asked to drive PT and here I am doing about 20-30 airport runs a month...
Nice. That's how things happen, they just kinda snowball

I have a hunch from working 3 days a week; retirement might not be what I thought

Good to keep busy more or less.
